Gunk on G500 Buttons

Hey guys! I recently bought a 2002 G500 with 155k on it. LOVE IT!!!! I'm trying to get this thing cleaned up, since the previous owner neglected her a bit. I noticed the buttons on the steering wheel (and a bit on the HVAC controls) are yellowed, peeling and appear to have a sticky clear-coat film on them? (wtf?) The backlit pictures are under it. How do I recondition this? It almost looks like if I remove it (somehow), the buttons could look new - any ideas how to deal with this disaster?
