my '16 did that EXACT thing this morning. EXACTLY as you described it with all the other systems working just fine. after fiddling around with the mute button and what not, i just shut it off. and restarted it. everything was fine again.

So G wage fam, had an chance to investigate my no sound issue with my command unit in 08 snack box. End up being just a 20 amp fuse in the dash side fuse box

No sound again

So not sure what happened but I lost sound again. After I replaced the E fuse for the sound system in the side dash fuse box. I Smelled a faint electrical burning smell coming out of the center dash vents with AC on so I pulled the radio. During which time I had the radio on to insure I had sound to try and see if and thing I may have done in particular would cause me to lose sound and I would know that was my issue. But everything went well and i saw no issues, so during my reinstall. I got down to putting back the the center vent assembly and center speaker cover and lost sound again. I check fuse to see if that was my issue but fuse was good, so I'm not sure what happened. I plan on pulling my radio again today to see if i can find anything wrong now. But does anyone out there have any suggestions before I take my baby into the dealership and get my head cracked open.

Thanks snack box comrades

Did you ever get this figured out?

I just got a 2011 G55 where Command comes on, but no audio. Sometimes I hear crackling sound.
Dealer I got it from diagnosed as faulty Amp. Before I get one, just want to confirm if there is anything else to check

Post 2000 MB audio amplifiers fail more often that a drunkard fails a sobriety test. It's a disgrace actually. Corrosion is the usual problem because MB didn't pay attention to the mounting locations. So it's an extremely good bet that's the source of your trouble.

Thank you for your feedback. I found couple used ones on eBay and will order after I check all of the fuses. It's actually funny where MB decided to 'hide' fuses on G wagens

Radio problem

Same thing happened to me on my 2016 G. The only way that I got to solve the problem was to remove the trim around the radio a nd pull the radio out and disconnect the plugs going on to the radio. Probably the same thing can be done by disconnecting the battery but I was afraid if I did that I would get all kind of error codes. That occurred two years ago and it has been working fine since then

I did some testing. Unplugged the fiber connector to amp under driver's seat and light comes on. So it seems that headunit is operational as I can switch between GPS, Radio, etc using the buttons.
I also learned that same amp is used on many other models, which too are having wide spread failures
