Spare Tire Bolt Size & What To Cover Holes with?
Greetings all,
Received the email that my new G was built. Awaiting shipment across the big pond. Pretty stoked, actually...
I definitely plan to remove the spare tire upon receipt of my new G. Removing the spare/cover will make the use of the boot more user friendly. I will also gain an unencumbered view out back. Washing the ride will also be easier without the spare tire/cover. Win/win in my eyes.
In light of the above, can anyone assist me in identifying the size of the spare tire bolts/holes which are attached to the rear hatch?
Has anyone found a solution to cover the three bolt holes that will be visible upon removal of the spare tire/cover? What works in covering up and thus would eliminate any potential rusting of my rear hatch? I figure, if I can cover the bolt holes with either smaller in length bolts or some other idea, then perhaps I can prevent rain/water from penetrating into the cavity of the rear hatch, thereby preventing any rust issues/concerns.
Looking forward to seeing if anyone else has done this. Google search and a search on this forum was fruitless. Pls share your successes/ideas...
TIA,
BB

I just went to the local auto-parts store and picked up a set of "GM Plastic Body Plugs" it came with a set of a few different sizes. One of them fit the hole near perfectly, was a tad loose, so just wrapped a couple layers of electrical tape around it and popped it in there. There is also a rubber grommet that sits around each hole as well so I left that there. Ultimately I will probably get the rear door filled, shaved, and painted so it is smooth, but I have no concerns about rust, water leakage, etc. as it is now.

^^^ Appreciate your response, and especially the photo!
Your G looks really good with those cool old school AMG/Brabus rims. Silver & black go so well together!
Thanks again & cheers,
B.

I found this in an old thread but I am not sure what size the holes are in different model years: https://www.mcmaster.com/9688k51

Nice!
After taking off the spare cover I am now a fan of the naked rear tire look. Even cool with it being in the current orientation its in. May consider a flip kit down the road, or look at the storage containers that are made to fit in that space.

Anyone know if there is a doughnut spare that fits the G? It would be nice to have a small one to put inside if the full size spare is removed.
