turning off Differential Lock Control

Can someone tell me how to turn off the middle Differential Lock. I put it on the red lit ; pushed bottom of rocker red went out but bottom amber lit.

How to get light on switch to go out completely?

The G-Class uses vacuum hydraulic differential locks, but in order for the locks to engage or release, there needs to be some slippage. First of all, never lock the diffs on tarmac as this puts too much strain on them. In order for them to lock, there has to be some slippage, so try driving forward a little and turn from side to side...same is true for releasing them. Even if you press the switch and the red light goes off, the amber one only goes off once the lock has actually disengaged.

for how long did it stay locked?

if you drive forward a little and do a couple of turns like jimmyg said, it should disengage. Sometimes, reversing would help.

This should work...if not you may have a fault.

Thanks guys, all set, the correct operation leaves you with the feeling like something isn't right because it takes some slippage like Jimmyg and others indicate for the amber light and the ABS indicator and others to go out.

Took it off road in the snow as we had a blizzard yesterday that delivered about 24" of snow...a lot of fun, I think its impossible to get the G stuck after that experience.....for everyone who was wondering about snow tires I have to tell you that imo the stock tires are really quite competent.

Boston was hit hard with snow, yes. I heard.

ps: I am sure all season stock tires do just fine in the snow.

Took her offroading yesterday and today in Jebel Ali... Why does diff lock II take a good 0.5-1 min for its top light to go on? Was moving around a bit to help it... !!

Moving around helps...but even then the lock may not fully engage until there's some slippage. Also, if the they are not used often/ever, sometimes it takes time for them to engage. Neither engaging or disengaging will be instantaneous.

But it doesn't necessarily mean I need to bleed them, right?!

On one youtube video, right before the MB offroad trainer took the 63 up on Iron Schokel, it took 3.5 sec to engage the rear diff while stationary.

BTW, saw a G79 yesterday (gorgeous) on my way to JA driven by two Dubai Policewomen!

Btw, having the diffs (and brakes) checked at Gargash next Sunday, just to make sure they're alright.

Perhaps it was an "Edition 79" with some custom badging.

You should be in Drive (D) as the diff locks require some slippage to engage.
