G55 Down Under

Picked up a new G55 to use as a tow car. The exhaust note is just awesome !! Really impressed with this car.

Will be fitting up the H&R wheel spacers, full carbon interior from MAcarbon and also the Brembo big brake kit, I'll post some updated pics as the mods are installed.

It's interesting that most of the V8 Holden drivers all give a thumbs up when they see the G55, it must be the sound !!

Thanks for that, it will look even better once the mods are all finished. Looking forward to getting them done.

After reading a lot of the posts about how harsh the ride is I was surprised when I drove it out of the showroom. It's not as firm as what you would take on the track but also not too soft that it wallows over bumps. Too me the ride is perfect, love it.

what mods you have in mind? I use to live in Melbourne, now relocated back to Hong Kong.

Gonna get a G55/63. to travel between china and hong kong. So the ride quality to me is a determining factor.

G55, E63
Did you black (blue) out the car or did it come stock this way? Guards, wheels, cover, etc.

One of the best looking G55s I've seen.

I've got quite a bit happening on the mod side:

H&R spacers
MAcarbon interior
Kleemann K3 kit including ECU upgrade, pulley upgrade, camshaft, headers, downpipes and first stage cat bypass. The next kit up from here is the K4 kit with the only difference being the addition of the larger throttle bodies. The 2011 G55 already comes with larger throttle bodies stock from AMG so I only need to install the K3 kit to get the power increase of the K4 (620Hp and 900Nm): Kleemann 55-K4 Kit
Brembo Big Brake kit

Re the ride, it's a fairly firm ride however it's no different to any other AMG vehicle (which are mostly firm). I drove an E63 today and it was very similar. If you are wanting a soft ride it's not going to be the best choice. But everything is a compromise, soft ride = soft handling.

Thanks, the colour is the Mercedes Chromite Black, depending on the light it can look dark blue, black or even purple. I blacked out the following items:

Wheels
Rear wheel cover
Front brush bar (excluding uprights)
Side steps
Front grill incl mercedes emblem
Exhaust (ceramic coated matte black)
Removed chrome strips along the side

Also removed all of the badges and had all of the lens smoked out (except the main headlights)

Well, you certainly won't get any arguments here regarding the G55's stiff ride however, IMO comparing it to an E63 is apples to oranges. Just about anything with independent suspension will out handle and offer a significantly more comfortable ride then a solid axle truck.

No, not in Sydney. Based in Adelaide.

I've had some additional mods installed recently. Apologies for the average pics (took these with my phone), will get better ones posted up when time permits.

Brembo big brake kit:

Front 380mm cross drilled and vented rotor with 8 piston caliper (can also see the 30mm spacer):

Rear 342mm cross drilled and vented rotor and 4 piston caliper (prior to the spacer being installed):

MAcarbon interior

I picked up the interior carbon trim pieces from John at MAcarbon. Fantastic service and a really nice guy as well. I can highly recommend the quality of the MAcarbon pieces. I have the new steering wheel with carbon inserts coming and also the new G55 carbon gear knob. Will post some more pics when these arrive:

Before (better quality pic):

Air con surround:

During install:

Centre console:

Another Centre console pic:

Mercedes iPad entertainment kit

This kit has only just been released by Benz for the new ML series. They don't show it as an option for the G55 but I was able to order the parts and we worked out how to install it. Where there's a will, there's a way !!

Will post some more pics as it all comes together.

Just would like know, can the G Class upgrade the Brembo big brake kit without the spacer ?

Do you also upgrade a different brake fluid and stainless steel brake line ?

thanks.

Yes, the Brembo big brake kit can be installed without the spacers. You only need the spacers if you want a more aggressive look with the tires filling up more of the guard (the spacers were purchased separately from H&R)

The Brembo kit includes new stainless braided brake lines but doesn't come with any brake fluid. I changed the stock brake fluid out for Castrol SRF race fluid.

I cannot agree more about John and CarbonMA. Their CF work looks better than OEM.

"V8" instead of "G55" on gear knob?

I was also going to say that!

I got the first G55 in Oz exactly a year ago today. Time flies when you're having fun.

Anyways , you could of ordered the CF interior from the dealer for what it's worth.
Car looks good though.

The G55 gear knob is over at MAcarbon getting the carbon inlay done and will come back with the new steering wheel in a week or so time.

MB Australia don't show a carbon interior option for the G55. I special ordered a piece in from MB in Germany to have a look at and Hovyamg is correct, the quality of the carbon from MAcarbon is far better than the OEM Merc pieces.

I am not sure it's actually possible to order CF interior parts. Maybe if you have the vin# of a Edition 79 (?).

Three-four years ago, I was in the works to have the wood of my 09 G55 converted to CF with MAcarbon (but the vehicle was stolen). I remember John telling me it takes about 3-4 weeks and he needed all the parts, makes sense now. If I recall right, the CF work is done in Belgium.

Enjoy your new trim, it fits your car perfectly.

Correct, MAcarbon did a joint venture with a factory in Belgium and subsequently bought the other partner out a while ago. It is now owned completely by John. All of the carbon work is done there.

Hi,

It is possible, a car that came a couple of weeks after mine into the dealership had it done along with Matte paint. Looked good but I still preferred my Piano black.
It was requested and approved for about $4k
I asked for red stitching instead of the white on the leather and was told it could be done......but at a price of about $50k AUD ~ $55k USD

Yep, standard MB towbar for the G Class. Not sure exactly how much it was as it was included in the price of the car (3k springs to mind). It also came with the MB LED resistor pack which you need to use if your trailer has LED lights.

Had some more items installed over the last few weeks while I've been away traveling (apologies for the phone pics):

Front headlight and indicator grills:

Can also just see the rear light grill covers

Here's a pic parked next to the other toy. Very much chalk and cheese but you can't beat the attitude of the G55.
