AMG Badge on non AMG cars?
Guys,
I know this subject has been covered here and I apologize for the new thread but I wanted some direct answers and thought this may help. I have found some compelling evidence on this board that suggests that in order to have a true AMG car, it must have an AMG motor. I know there are AMG apperence packages but to my knowledge that does not include an AMG badge. In other words, no AMG built motor, no badge. Can anyone please confirm that for me. The reason I am posting this is because I am having a little bit of an argument with some folks on one of the Audi forums as to the validity of what I just said. They claim that some non AMG cars with the AMG apperence package did indeed come with the AMG badge "from the factory". I am not doubting the statements they make based solely on the fact that it's an Audi Forum, but more from my own understanding of this and if I am indeed wrong I would like to know. With that said, can anyone here please settle this for me once and for all.
Here's an example of what they are talking about. What's the story with this car?

Thanks for the help and again sorry for the new post on this subject.

"No engine, no badge" see my signature below. The dealers are the ones applying the ////AMG badge to the cars with the styling packages. The factory only applies the AMG badge when it leaves with the motor. The car listed falls into the same catagory I mentioned,or the previous owner was a "poser".

The bad part is that people will buy these cars with the badges on them that aren't AMG but will get duped into paying AMG prices. They just don't know any better. Then they will go on thinking they have an AMG and will get exposed. Happens all the time.

Speaking of this, I saw a C230 with a C55 and AMG badge on it today. Just don't understand how people can drive their car with the wrong badging. I guess it's just a little bit of wishful thinking.

Enzo, my Benzo
I agree with the No Motor No Badge on the newer mass production AMGs but on older cars like W124's, when I bought my ducktail 3 piece amg spoiler it came with the rear, period correct badge, along with mounting/positioning instructions. Same with my GEN II kit. It came with the small amg badge similar to the one found on the C36.
If the badge CAME with TRUE amg parts on the older cars, it's ok, IMO...otherwise no go.
**That doesn't mean every kid with stock W124s should throw on AMG badges cause they have monoblock IIs. Everyone has monoblock II's
PS I don't have AMG badging on my car.

As referenced by the W124 owner, before the AMG merger with Daimler, the AMG badge was available to an ower when the car was prepared by the authorized AMG tuner, IF there were at least two tuning packages installed. So, if a customer had the suspension tuning and aero body tuning, then it qualified for the badge.

If an Audi A6 has S bumpers is it a S6, NO. So why would a CLK430 with AMG bumpers be a CLK430 AMG? Its not.
Few weeks ago saw a W202 C32 AMG!!!
If I bought a 2002 E55 the first thing I would do is badge it as a E320

i've got to disagree with the opinions here
i personally believe that putting an AMG badge on is ok if you have AMG parts. you're not saying its something its not, as you have the other badge telling everyone what car it is.
eg i have a CLK500. if i put the AMG badge on there that's because i have the AMG appearance package and a few other AMG parts. But.. i still have the CLK500 on the other side. i'm not saying my car is a CLK55 i'm just saying that i like AMG and have some of their parts on board.
However.. it would be sinful to take off your model number badge and repalce it, eg changing the CLK500 to CLK55 that is complete sin and trying to say you have something you don't.
Just my opinion
If i saw a G35 with a nismo badge it would be ok
If i saw an IS-F with a TRD badge it would be ok
Thus a MB with AMG badge is also ok if suitably equipped
And just for clarification, here in Australia, all the new C-class' that come with the AMG appearance package (CLK200K/CLK280 etc) ALL have AMG badges from the FACTORY.

Interesting reply. I had an email from AMG that specifically echoed what has been said above - basically from the point AMG was acquired by Mercedes, AMG trunk badges were only given to AMG cars. Certain parts such as wheels have the AMG logo on them, even though they are on non-AMG cars, but that is because they are AMG parts. Putting an AMG on the back of the vehicle, in the style of a proper AMG car, is not correct, according to AMG. The AMG rear trunk badge is part of a model designation that is reserved for AMG cars, and imitation because of an AMG appearance package is simply incorrect. There is no such thing as a CLK500 AMG, or CLK200 AMG, or whatever, and the AMG appearance packages do not change that.
It's not really a big deal, because as another person said a lot of people simply aren't aware of this, but the actual technical explanation that I got indicated AMG trunk badges are for model designation - not for decoration. The AMG is there because it's an AMG car, and it's done in a way consistent to the class/type (E55, CLK55, whatever) because it's meant to designate that the car is, in fact, an AMG.
I hope that makes sense.

So, by that logic, if one were to purchase AMG floormats, it would be acceptable for them to put "AMG" on the decklid of their trunk?
Nah, I'm playing, but there is an unwritten code of ethics among enthusiasts when it comes down to OEM tuners like AMG, ///M, etc. No engine, no badge. That's just the "generally accepted" philosophy. My opinion is that it's the right one. When the average consumer sees AMG on the back of a Mercedes, they expect higher horsepower performance. It's a deception to most if that is implied but not there.
Just my opinion though.

That is true because our 2002 E320 that we purchased only 1 year old came with an AMG badge on it.

yup i agree no motor no badge....
amg is about performance.... appearance packages are just appearance packages..
for example: a mustang v6 is a mustang v6 you can make it a clone of an 2003 cobra and put cobra badges but its not.. your still missing 250 horse power... even with a mustang GT you can make that into a clone of an 2003 cobra and even put a supercharger on is and make it faster and more powerful then a 2003 cobra but it doesnt make it a cobra and a mach 1 mustang has the exact identical motor as a cobra but it doesnt have the signatures stamped on the motor and the compression is diferant and it doesnt have a blower... amg clones are cool but keep the right badges on... if its a v6 then put a v6 badge...

your car, your option to pose. do whatever your ego needs to feel happy....
as long as you're not expecting anyone to believe you, or know that some
will snicker. wear your toupee. enlarge your breasts. whiten your teeth.
makes me no never mind. if, however, you attempt to sell it as an AMG,
declare affirmatively that it is an MB AMG e.g. telling your friends, etc,
I will pour cold water on your wee wee and watch your ego shrivel.
otherwise, knock yourself out.

what do you guys think of this. I have a 03 s500 with full lorinser package and everything blacked out.
i just purchased the na55 amg engine and its being transplanted next week into the car.
what can i do for badges.??
so far the back of the car has the S500 on the left and the lorinser emblem on the right.
Do i remove the s500 emblem and out S55 or do i put 5.5 only?
