Steering wheel lock and motor, running boards

2014 ML350. Searched for these but no luck. Noticed today that the easy exit feature was not raising the steering wheel on exit. Fooled with the adjustments and teh wheel would move fore and aft, but not up and down. You could hear a noise when the up/down lever was pushed but no movement. Also it seems that the wheel is not locking in Park with the engine off. Stopped by the dealer and the service tech said the motors go out. Is this common across the brand? 30k on the clock.

The aluminum running boards have water deposits on them that won't come off. A wheel refinishing company nearby said they could be powder coated but they wouldn't want to be responsible for taking them off. Car has the light kit. Question is can the sills themselves be removed without taking off the whole structure? If they can maybe I'll just replace them.
