Is it OK to open and close the liftgate manually, or would that damage the motor? Our concern is that someone may not know or may forget about the power option, and do something to harm the mechanism.

Did a forum search and did not see this discussed.

Don't think its an issue. Hard to imagine anyone trying to close trunk manually would not realize the feel of the automatic closer. In any event the only thing they can do would be to try to hurry it along I can't see where any damage would be done.

Noting in manual which says can't close manually. I adjust it all the time since i have set it to open to partial height so that my kids could reach the button.
When i am using it, i always push it higher to avoid stitches in the head
