Squeaky Brakes & Brake Dust -

Is anyone else experiencing squeaky brakes and massive amounts of brake dusts? It is sincerely annoying!! To remove this ad, register today or login if you already are registered!

There may be a TSB out on squeaky brakes.

But brake dust with a MB is a fact of like. After 30 years of putting up with it I don't think they will change anything in the way they make brake pads. They really believe in stopping a car and dust is part of the cost. Keep the wheels waxed or coated and use a Swifter Duster to dust them off.

Use a product like Rejex and hose them off often between detailing or dry wipe as NJ suggested. It takes me as much time on the wheels as it does on the rest of the car, PITA!

Had squeaks but dealer replaced all 4 pads and no squeaks anymore. Dust galores and I use a glass cleaner to remove. Spray on and wipe off. Works well.

German cars are like that. My Bimmers are the same way, constant problem with brake dust. There are ceramic brake pads available that drastically reduce dust and are almost as good as OEM. I wouldn't use them on my 645, but would on the GL.

IMO, wax is not a good thing to put on your wheels. It has too low a melting point. A synthetic polymer like Zaino, Klasse SG, or Rejex would be much better. I began using Rejex lately and haven't seen a big improvement. I think Klasse AIO (without the SG topcoat) can't be beaten - along with regular cleaning.

Dust is certainly an issue on nearly all Mercedes... My 1985 300TD dusts the front wheels like crazy. Hit them with the hose or the power washer once a week.

My brakes have been squeaking a bit, of course, this is after I took it in for the free initial service The brake dust is quite heavy, but this is my first MB, so I wasn't sure if that was normal or not...looks like it is!

Anybody try the "Kleen Wheels" dust cover to prevent brake dust buildup on wheels?

I have been thinking about these but am apprehensive about the heat buildup. Don't want a molten rotor to avoid brake dust.

Heat buildup is an issue with those things. They have slots in them to help air circulation which means 2 things:

1) Heat buildup is a problem or they wouldn't put slots in them.
2) The air that circulates via the slots will also carry brake dust to your wheels.

Don't waste your money. Resign yourself to cleaning your wheels frequently or get ceramic aftermarket pads.

Yes, I did have very squeaky brakes, along with brake dust. I got very sick of it, so I took it to the MB dealer. I was then told by the dumba$$ service guy that squeaky brakes are normal. Not on a 70k car! I demanded that they were replaced, the problem was then solved. I no longer have squeaky brakes, and not as much brake dust.

From the beginning

I don't know what it is with MB brakes but my first MB - a 1980s era 560SEL - had massive amounts of brake dust. I spoke with both MB certified mechanics and independents and both said, it's brake dust. Clean it off or leave it on, but trying to block it will result in heat problems.

Just FWIW.

Amen, brother. That makes up my mind. I can live with that dust and cleaning wheels every week.

My 12 year old is all over that every Sat afternoon. 20 bucks for 3 cars, but he's been negotiating for 25 lately.

Go kid! As long as he's doing it right, for three cars let him negotiate!

Mine is 4 right now so it's a bit of a challenge at this time to get him to clean anything. Hopefully, he will learn in next 8 years

Brake dust is common with German cars. Seen them on all Volkswagens, Audis, BMWs, and Mercedes. If it were a sedan with a nice set of wheels, I wouldn't mind as it gives it the gunmetal look like on the 65 AMG series wheels. Gunmetal wheels for free!!

At least stopping power is good (as NJ mentioned) so I don't mind brake dust.

Give him 14 more years and he'll clean out your bank account!

Does anybody have the recall info for squeaky brakes? I have my GL in for the A service and the service department is telling me there is no technical service bulletin applicable to my vehicle.
Thanks!

Yeap, squeaky & dusty!!! Manhattan MB cost me $250 to apply anti-squeak thing. but after 2 days still squeak also at service A 12000 miles MB guy told me my front have 50% and my rear have 75% left. Is MB brake worn that fast

I never need to replace brake pad on my Audi 39 month leasing terms. Looks like I needed for this one

We have had many MB with squeaky brakes due to brake dust build-up. At one point we had a late 1980's MB (I think it was a 420SEL) that had a big problem with this. The MB dealer beveled the leading edge of the front brake pads, and that seemed to solve the problem to some extent. I was told it helped reduce the amount of brake dust build-up.

It's not a molten rotor that you'll have, it will be boiled brake fluid.

These things are expressly and emphatically prohibited by Mercedes.

Brake dust and MB go hand in hand. Consider it a Badge of Honor and live with it...
