First time buyer, is it too late to order a 2007 GL320CDI?

I went to the dealership this afternoon to go test a GL320CDI. Needless to say, I was very impressed with the drive. Get back to the SR desk to order one and , I discover they are no longer producing the 2007 GL320CDI . He tells me they are starting on the 2008. Anyway, what can i expect out of the 2008 model? Pricing? Features? Etc?

They are still building 2007 GL320s. Mine is scheduled for a July 9 build. He may have meant that you can't ORDER a 2007 any longer. There were some earlier posts about a new P2 package on the 2008 models but no pricing yet.

If you KNOW you're going to get an '08, do you go for the 420CDI?

I would...but no availability for the US has been announced. It doesn't look like it will be here for the '08's. That will be THE beast...519 ft-lb of torque!

Any tips on purchasing. How do I go about ordering a vehicle that has no pricing or info? Is there any negotiating room? I'm a first time buyer of a benz and would like as many tips as possible. Thank you.

There will be no GL420 CDI in the U.S, instead we get the GL420 Bluetec for the 2009 model year which will be when MB gets the 50 state ok to sell all their diesels.

Regarding "CDI," I stand corrected! As for when it comes here, it'll tow a flippin' house.

With the urea injection, won't it meet all 50?

I ordered my GL 320 on Jan. 27 and it arrived on March 24. The way this happed was that another dealer had a slot to get a GL 320. That dealer traded the 320 slot for a 450 slot that was coming to my dealer. Once my dealer got the other one to trade, we were able to change the order to exactly what I wanted, and it came in just like I ordered. Perfect. I have seen several 320s available from a dealer in Colorodo on Ebay.

As for ordering a 320 vs. waiting for a 420, I would give serious consideration to what you really need it for. If you are going to tow a huge boat or something, the 420 might be better. But for everyday driving, especially on the highway, the 320 is great. It has plenty of power and excellent passing ability. And the reviews I have read about the 420 say its mileage is not much better than a 450, and it is not a smooth as the 320. I traded a LX 470 with only 14K miles on it because I was sick of the stupid tailgate and third row seats that were a pain in my *** to take up and down. The GL is much better for carpooling kids. And we use the GL mostly for road trips so I could not see why I might need the diesel V8 over the V6, the assumption being that it might be nice to have a little faster 0 - 60 car for around town driving. Honestly, my GL 320 is at least as peppy as the LX 470 was. Another advantage of the 320 is the excellent mileage. I am averaging 21 mpg NOT being nice to it, and I get about 24 on the highway moving along at 80 mph. The LX 470 got no better than 14 mpg, ever!

I went to do my Sunday afternoon car viewing when there are no salemen running after me and found this amazing looking Ford Super Duty 4 door priced at CD$69,000.00 plus 14% sales tax! (CD$1=US$0.9)

This truck has around 350 horses and 540 plus foot pound torque and has these funny looking vent holes at the exhaust tips for cooling. The particulate filter gets dangerously hot when it burns off the soot every now and then.

The reason I am saying this on a MB board is that the 2008 and newer trucks are going to be similar to these US trucks, with lots more emission equipment and with them, more things to go wrong.

Buy a 2007 Bluetec if you can. Come 2008 the Californian mandated AdBlue will come in and you are doomed. More check engine lights. More filters to replace. More urea bottles to fill up.

Buy one now and have it grandfathered.
