Check Engine Light

Does the check engine light reset after a certain amount of time or engine starts?

While we were on a weekend trip up to the mountains (6,500 ft. elevation climb), I received a message inside the car that the gas cap was not secured. The gas cap was on but I probably did not tighten it past the required three clicks. It says right on the cap to tighten past at least three clicks or the check engine light will come on. They weren't kidding as the check engine light has been on ever sense. How long until this the light goes off? Can I reset the light manually?

Don't know about the MB, but my husband lost the gas cap from our Civic while he was filling it (don't ask) and the check engine light came on. He drove 70 miles home without the gas cap. I went to the Honda dealer the next day & bought a gas cap. The Civic manual said it would take 3 days of "normal" driving for the check engine light to go out. Sure enough, 3 days later, the light went out.

This is too much of a coincidence, IMO. This Tuesday, I had my dash display go red and "Gas cap not on" message came up and also the reserve fuel level light started flashing on the fuel gauge. I admired the display of lights and ignored it and it went away after about 10 minutes. I did not see the Check Engine light at all. And, no, the gas cap was not on loosely.

Weird, huh..........

Yes that is weird. My gas cap was not loose either. I had tightened it to at least one click as I do in BMW. I just learned that the GL wants three clicks. I think part of my issue was that my weekend drive included a big change in altitude. Obviously, I did not have the cap on tight enough. I will let you know how long it takes for the check engine light to turn off. It first came on Sunday, 7/8.

Too much technology, there must be "click counter" in the fill neck.

I checked the owner manual and under the "practical hints . . . what to do if" section I found this situation addressed. The manual says that if the check engine light comes on due to a loss of fuel system pressure from the gas cap, that when refueling to start, turn off and restart the engine three or four times in succession. I completed this procedure but the check engine light remains on . I am going to take the car in soon for service A so I will have the dealership address the problem.
