Knock sensors on Diesel- required to reduce that black smoke
Knock sensors are required on Diesel engines to help reduce that black smoke that, if you are old enough to remember, used to come from the exhausts of the old diesel cars in their early inception. The EPA requires that a minimum amount of pollutants leave the exhaust of any car, but the diesel exhaust, when the fuel is not being compressed to ignition, produces a black (and polluting) smoke. So, when your knock sensor in the Mercedes causes your CEL to go off, get it checked and replace the knock sensor if needed....
Being the first year for the '09 BTC, I imagined we would run into a few glitches, but I didn't expect it so soon. At around 2200 miles, the CEL came on - dealer diagnosed it as a faulty knock sensor. This was last Friday and for some reason the part is on back order...should hopefully show up sometime next week.
On the plus side, everything else works flawlessly and we are averaging around 24 mpg. I just hope this is a freak occurrence and not an indication of things to come.
