2010 GL 450 Foglight Swap!!!
Hi guys..i have a 2010 GL 450. I bought it with the normal foglights, (as i call them the double gunshots). And i wanna put in the LED DRL's. I've found the OEM LED's and the OEM Chrome casing that goes around the LED's. I know i need to take it into the dealership so then can change Star Diognostics to LED Lighting.
But how does the wiring of the LED's go? Because when i looked at my double fogs, theres 2 wires running from 2 lights. Do they lead to the same converter box or something? How does the installing part work?
Please help me out guys!!!
Thanks!

I am just starting to look into the upgrade and would appreciate if you could share the part numbers you selected. I presume that by know you had it installed, if so any background info and/or lessons learned would be very welcomed.
Thanks!

The halogen headlight-equipped GLs come with the "double shot" lighting you describe, and you have 2 foglights and 2 daytime running lights (DRL).
The HID headlight-equipped GLs do NOT come with foglights at all, just the LED DRLs.
To convert former to latter will require a different light switch (no front foglight postion)

I am planning to use the fog switch to control the LED lights. It may require an additional load in parallel in order to emulate to full incandescent bulb current draw and prevent "bad lamp" errors from being displayed.
I could take an extra step to include a simple circuit and have some AND/ OR combination (as in the math/ logic operators) of the fog lamps, existing DRL and headlight signals to get something like:
1. DRLs ON/ FOG OFF/ HEADLIGHT OFF = LEDs ON FULL
2. DRLs OFF (reduced ambient lighting)/ FOG OFF/ HEADLIGHT OFF = LEDs OFF
3. DRLs X (ON or OFF)/ FOG ON/ HEADLIGHT OFF = LEDs ON FULL regardless of
ambient light
4. DRLs X / FOG OFF/ HEADLIGHT ON - LEDs DIMMED (like on my S550)
5. DRLs X / FOG ON / HEADLIGHT ON - LEDs ON FULL at the same time with the headlights (not possible by default in the S550, but it may not look good because it would clash with the dimmer LEDs inside the S550 headlights).
Now that we are in the "looks" subject, did anyone replace (or heard of somebody else doing it) the yellow marker inside the headlights with a clear one? The yellow one is such an eyesore, especially if you can color match the HIDs and LEDs in the headlights...that small incandescent bulb looks so out of place
Here are the parts required for the 2010 & 2011 GL350/ 450 that I found so far:
164-820-08-56 - LED DRL Strip
164-820-09-56 - LED DRL Strip
164-884-73-22 - Chrome Cover
164-884-72-22 - Chrome Cover
164-884-72-22 - Black Cover (the one behind the chrome cover)
164-884-71-22 - Black Cover
913023-005002 - Nuts (4 pcs)
The wiring may require some modification, but would not know until I open everything up.
It would be great to hear from from someone that performed the modification on a 2010 or 2011 GL350/ 450 and share any details.
Thanks!

other thread with pictures. he does mention have to buy a different wiring harness for leds to wire into factory plug...
he also has a few more parts listed than you do
https://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-...x-finally.html
did you order the parts yet?

The 2010-2011 GL350/ 450 front bumper is different from the 2007-2009 models which is what the thread appears to be for.
The 2009 (and previous year models) fog lights have a dual strip design (chromed or black plastic), while the 2010-20011 is a single strip.
He just got very lucky that the revised 2010-2011 GL550 LEDs DRLs use the same dimensions and original dual-strip design found in the previous 2007-2009 GL320/ 450 models
Thanks.

I think you will be removing the existing h11 plug base and replacing it with whatever the led connector is. Should be a simple splice.
Plus you will need the inline resistor mentioned in the other thread I linked to above.

I ended up doing my swap. The only problem is that you have a wire, that is a separate DRL light that can be on during the day (lamp number 1)
And you also have a fog light.
****AKA double barrel^*****
So from there, I went ahead and spliced both sets of cables, and combined both of the - & + (2 negative and 2 positive wires). Connected those to a 6ohm 50watt resistor(eliminates the light error).
The only problem that I'm having is that if you have your headlights on at night, and want to have the LEDs on also, you can't, becuase the LEDs flicker to a point that it's annoying for whom ever is passing you because you'll blind them.
Can anyone help me with resolving them flickering at night?
Thanks!

Thank you
If you have a 2008 GL, then you should look into the link to EURODOK thread he posted on here. I can send you a link later when I get on a computer. It seems to me that your bumper is the same as his, therefore you can just follow his write up and you should be fine. And if you have part #'s and ordered your parts, you'll for sure get it done during the holidays.
Once again thank you

Thank you jchochla. I have link to eurodok. However in that he mentions two separate led drls. One for 350/550 which he used. I am confused about that. Is 350 and 550 same or 350 and 450 have same bumper lengths. Below in that thread poas user has I guess different LEDs. I may have one shot at doing this and want to make sure ordering correct parts.
Once again thank you

Thank you
You want to go with the 550 parts. Because he has a 2007-8 GL320, which is the same bumper MB used in 2009, but with a beefier grill. The best way to double check this and be positive is to google 2009 GL 550, and 2008 GL450. And you'll notice that the grill is different but the fog light cut out is the same
If all goes well it is well worth 5000$ for me as I want that LED look in my near perfect 08 450.
As always i would pay back the forum with my insights. Thank you Jchochla.

I ordered the parts and would be here in a week just in my vacation time. Total cost around 460$ + 10$ (resister).

Sorry about the delay with the pictures. I was busy with Christmas and all yesterday. Anyway, here are the pictures with the black surrounds, chrome accent pieces, and both lamp-housings (with bulbs). I had these on my car for about 15K miles.
When a buddy of mine's car got hit, he had to order every single piece separately at the dealer. He ended up paying over $600 for everything.
Im asking $300+$15 for shipping through USPS anywhere in the USA.
Please contact me if interested.
Happy Holidays to all,
Thanks!
