Most MB's have this issue. The OEM pads are soft which helps with initial bite and to stop the cars/trucks very well, but....there is alot of brake dust and the pads wear quickly.

I tend to switch to Akebono pads or EBC as soon as the originals wear out. The stopping power does not appear to diminish, and there is almost no dust. To be more accurate, i think the dust may be very light in color as well as there being less of it.

Pagid and Jurid are often the OEM makes.

Also, MBZ uses German-spec brake pads and TUV (the German regulartory agency) requires a certain amount of carbon black in brake pad compound (which is not required in the US). That's why MBZ and BMW cars have traditionally dirty front wheels.

You can solve this problem with a good aftermarket street brake pad.

They want high initial bite, as I understand it.

Really really common topic in the BMW community (where I'm from).

I've definitely noticed excessive dust on MBs before, but on my C63 and my GL, if you drive sanely then it really isn't that bad.

The last time I rotated my tires, I applied an Armor All spray that helps eliminate brake dust build up. A month later, it's holding up pretty good. The wheels get less dirty, but wash up is really easy and cleans up as new. I think its worth a try. I Got it at Wal-Mart, 3-4 bucks. 1 can did all 4 wheels.

+1 on the Akebono ceramic pads.

They aren't supposed to bite as much, but they worked like a charm on my BMW 540i. Much, Much less brake dust too.

I will be switching to Akebono's on my Gl450 as soon as I need new pads.

Welcome to the world of German cars. They all do that.

Solution is to apply car wax to your wheels. The dust washes off, then, much easier.

Replacement, i.e. aftermarket pads are ALWAYS a downgrade.

Amen to that.

hydrofluoric acid based wheel cleaners seem especially good on MB dust. It's dangerous, though...
