Question Car external temp gauge

The temp gauge doesn't seem to function well. It can be 70 degrees outside and if my car is stationary, the gauge reads 100. The dealer checked the thermometer and said it's operating within spec. Anyone else have this problem? Seems like an inherent design / placement issue with the GL. If I'm not the only one with this problem, I'll live with it.

It tends to be inaccurate for me until i start driving it around for a minute or so. My subaru does the same.

Thanks. I guess I've been lucky with my other cars!

Agreed. Every car I've owned has not been right on until you drive for a bit.

The sensor heat-soaks from all the trapped hot air while it's sitting. It takes a little airflow over it to cool it down to ambient.

Mark is correct, the sensor needs airflow for a few minutes of driving to get the correct temp. If your car has been sitting after driving, it can show extremely high temps when you first start up. I have a 2005 Z4 that the sensor reads exactly what it read when I shut the car off- hot or cold. Then it also requires a few minutes of driving to get the right temp.
So, Blee- drive for a bit and you should get an accurate reading.

Cheers
