GL550 and snow chains

Guys,

I had a GL450 and drove it extensively in the snow, including several times in insane conditions where chains (cable type) were absolutely essential. The gl450's 4matic system was phenomenal...

Anyway, now I have the GL550...owner's manual says no chains for the AMG 21 inch wheels (294/40 R21). Well, I am going to need to try it anyway as I do not wish to change wheels and tires for winter. Looks like plenty of clearance, especially if not on sport mode.

Can anyone tell me why I cannot do this?

Anyone else tried cable chains on their GL550's 21 inch wheels?

Any cable "chain" recommendations?

[in case you are wondering if I am serious about needing chains, last year it snowed about 30-40 FEET over the course of the season. Yes there are plows...but...there are always times the chains just have to come out.]

I'm curious why you wouldn't want a dedicated winter solution if you get 30+ feet of snow in your area?! Seems justified, especially since the 295s are the equivalent of four toboggans with any accumulation at all.

Good question-----well, I live and drive where it does not snow at all but on the weekends when we can we drive to our cabin only 60 miles away where it snows an insane amount.
