ML350 or GL450

Hello, guys,

I'm new to the forum and plan to have our first MB.
Before doing so, I want to ask for some advice from current owners of MB.

We have two kids and go camping once every one or two years with a trailer.

I knew 2013 GL450 is coming in September. But turbo engine is not what we liked. So, Should we get 13' ML350 or 12' GL450?

Thank you guys for input.

I previously owned a 2008 ML350 and currently have a 2011 GL450 so I can speak from experience. We also have two children and although there is plenty of room in the ML the GL is bigger since it has a third row so makes for a more comfortable ride on long trips. The fact that the GL has a V8 is a plus especially if you tow. My GL is more refined than the ML it replaced although the new ML is a new design with improved interior. Any other comparisons I can make have to do with features not available in 2008 so it wouldn't be fair to make them, like my GL has blind spot sensors to alert you when you are changing lanes on the highway and it has a better COMAND system.

Personally I don't care for the new ML's looks at all. It seems the made it more of a crossover than SUV. I like the GL better and the new one also seems appealing. You should be able to get a better deal for a 2012 than I did for my 2011 since it is last model year but not always the case since it depends on inventory.
At the end of the day the most important thing is what makes YOU happy, so go drive both and see what you like best.

Thanks a lot. I personally like the looking of GL over ML. Also the size of engine is my concern as well. I think GL is my goal.

BTW, How reliable is MB's air suspension? How does leather seat compare to standard seat?
Appreciate your input.

I ve had Benzes with leather in the past and my current one has MBTEX. The leather is great. The vinyl seats are so close to leather you will have a hard time telling the difference. One thing I didn't like about the leather was that I would slide in the seat especially when I wore dress pants. The leather needs treated every year or so. The vinyl needs nothing other than a wipe if needed and it far outlasts the leather. After a few years the leather creases and the cracks become visible, which is no issue with the vinyl. In my case, having little kids, the vinyl is fine since it is much stronger.

As far as airmatic, it is a great feature that eventually is known to break down since there are barious components involved like air bags, pump etc. They are quite expensive to repair but I still think it is worth it. If within warranty the dealer will repair for free. Keep in mind airmatic is standard on GLs. I ve read reports of failures at 50K all the way up to 100K miles.

Good luck

As a watcher from another page, I accept I run the risk of being booed off.

The GL seats seven, the ML five. That is a crucial difference. You have two kids, if you would like to go out with their mates or other family, you need the GL. Otherwise consider the ML.

With the option lists available, both can be set up similar. Price will vary in the ML's favour.
Handling will be similar but the ML is more agile. It does not suffer from pitching at all, despite its shorter wheelbase.
The new ML diesel has so much torque you will be overtaking uphill with ease, even with the trailer. The V8 has enough power for sure.
The trailer itself will compensate for any lack of internal space for your trips in an ML.
The ML will have better economy, and fit into parking spaces easier.

The looks are purely personal, so after you consider the facts, do as Inspector Clouseau did, ignore the facts and make the right decision.

Thanks, iankayem. I will try both and see which one is more preferable.
