How to clean chrome trim?

Ok trying to figure out how to get spots off the chrome* trim on my GL450. I went to the Dealership and they gave me chrome cleaner stuff by Mercedes, but it did not work. The picture below is the chrome in question.. how do i clean this so I don't see spots on it? Or is it even real chrome?

I live in Colorado.. so I think the spots are some type of acid/chemical from the snow trucks. The mercedes-benz dealer gave me some chrome cleaner by mercedes-benz and it doesn't even touch the spots.

I had a similar problem on my Audi chrome. I found Mothers clay bar and detailing lube worked well for me. I'm sure other clay bar would work as well. I use a small piece, and toss it when i'm done. Goes really black. steve

I live in CO also. I've found that the magnesium chloride that the CO DOT puts on the highways during the winter does damage chrome and stainless trim pieces. In the winter I apply two or three coats of a thick paste wax on the trim, letting each coat dry and then apply another coat without buffing the preceeding one. It looks dull but seems to work fairly well.
