Smile 265/50/20 or 285/50/20 Help!

I have 09 GL450 w/20" wheels. I need to get new set of reg tires from run on flat. I don't want to get current 275/50/20 size, because 275 is more expensive than 285 or 265, and only few choices out there.
Since I'm in WA state, have to consider snow weather.
My questions are;
- Does 265 work better than 285 on snow? and Does it make big difference?
- GL has TPMS, is it OK to mount the tires at Costco? or need to bring tires to
the dealer? I'm not sure since I really don't know about the car.

Thanks in advance.

Costco should be able to deal with TPMS. But honestly not a big fan of Costco as they consistently scratch my wheels when mounting and dismounting the tire from the rim.

It'd be helpful if you put the city and state in your profile so we can better assist you.

Discount/America's tire > Costco

All else being equal:

265 will be a little better in snow and offer better turn in

285 will offer more ultimate dry grip and ride a little squishier

GL450
I have a 2010 GL450 and looking to get snow tires as I have All Seaon on right now and do not work well when it snows in Colorado. I am too looking at 265 or 285s. I am thinking about going with Blizzak DM-V1s and go with the 265s as they will do better in snow. Any thoughts before I buy on 265s vs 285s for a snow/winter tire?

Thanks!

So that being said of the 285/85/20 tires, which is the best brand/tread-wear and design for driving on California freeways and local street surfaces for the best possible ride? NO snow !

Received message from MB Canada that 285-50-20 is not approved tires for GLs. What are the consequences if I install them? I am looking at Michelin or Pirellis.

Your speedo will read about 1.3% too slow.

I have the same situation. Have 2011 GL350 with stock 20" rim on stock 275/50/20 tires. Just bought 19" rims intended for winter tires. Question is which tire size do I need for my 19" rims. Looking at Blizzak too.

275/55/19. I would have gone to 18" tires for the snow. There are even fewer choices in the 19" wheels than the 20".

running 285/30/24 no problems with speedo n picks up faster than stock since the forged 24s r lighter than stock 21s..

wheel weights have no effect on speedo accuracy. if your speedo is reading faster it means your new tires have smaller diameter than the stock ones.

on the subject of 265 vs 285 - it is a trade off- narrower wheels will do better in the slush, but when pushed on the dry will understeer more aggressively. and if you have ever pushed your truck (intentionally or not) you will know that undesteer is its middle name.

the Stock 18" runs on 265.. but if given the choice I would get 285. you will have a slightly higher sidewall and better ride.
