Rims and tires for GL320
Hi There
I'm new to this forum, and am looking to get some advice re rims. I recently ditched my XC90 and made the switch to the GL. Have to say the GL is one well designed vehicle. With that said one of the pain points I had with the volvo is it would eat tires for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The GL has been pretty good for the 1 1/2 years we've had it. I'm looking at getting a second set of rims for winter tires. I'd like to take the stock 18s that are on it currently and use them for winter and was considering getting 295/40R/21 for the summer.... do you know if these fit and look OK if the truck doesn't have the flares that are on the 550? I'm not sure if they would work and am looking for advice.
Thanks
John

Yes if will look great with the 21" wheels and no flares. Of course it all depens what size(how wide) the tire you are planing to have...

I would not go with the 21" wheels and tires. There are very few available tires and are very expensive. Go with a nice 22" and you will probably be much happier with the wheel and tire selections.

If you have airmatic suspension go with 22". I was running them this summer the airmatic takes up the difference in ride quality after a day and makes the ride MUCH better in normal mode, no more float. Sport is truly aggressive now, great for smooth roads. I was not considering 22" but found a deal and am not regretting it, it is awesome plus tires are much cheaper the bigger you go (strange but true, especially selection wise). Stick with Mercedes specific wheels with a huge offset and you will not need fender flares, 22x10 and 40-60 offset ranges should work out fine (I have a R class, do a bit of research for the GL). I would avoid staggered wheels if you like long tire life, rotation is very important!

Mine suffered no degredation of ride with the 22's. In fact, the ride is just as good but the handling is greatly improved. Tires are also much less expensive and last longer to boot.
