Angry Tailgate Not Opening

I have searched this forum and the www and can't find any solutions, so hoping someone out there has come across issue.

When I try to open tailgate I hear it making noise as if its opening, but doesn't open. I have to crawl through the 3rd row and open tailgate manually every time.

Someone told me I have to replace the latch (not sure if it has to be replaced or it can be fixed)

Any ideas on how to fix issue?

You don't say where you are located and that always presents a problem when answering your type of question. If you are in or near a big city you will get a different answer than if you aren't. If you are in the US or Canada the answers will be very different than the rest of the world (ROW).
First choice, if you are near a major population center is to ask around, talk to neighbors or friends and locate an independent repair service. That indy should have experience working on German cars. Get them to give you an estimate of what is wrong and the cost of fixing it.
Second choice is a dealer with their very high fixed costs - that you will pay for. This choice may be the only one available if you are NOT near a good indy. It may also be the best choice if the only problem is an adjustment of the latching motor. You earlier search should have turned up some incidents where the tail hatch es had adjustment issues. If that is the case, only a dealer might have mechanics experienced in the adjustment process.

Can you open the tailgate manually from the outside? Not using the key fob, but grabbing the handle in the rear license plate recess and pulling up the tailgate. I'm curious as to why it would open manually from the inside, but not open from the outside?

It seems like you have a faulty motor or something stripped in the mechanism. I had the motor go out in my 2007.

I'm having the same problem with my 07 GL 450. I have to go in the back and open it from the inside. I tried using the key fob, opening it from the back manually, or hitting the switch on the side of the passenger door with no luck at all. Can anyone help us figure this thing out?

Thanks.

I haven't fixed it yet. But I do know that I either have to take out the lock mechanism clean it out and grease it...or replace it...taking apart lid to do so doesn't seem like an easy task, so I have been putting it off

I did this myself. It's the latch. Part # A 164 740 07 35
It cost under $250.00.

If it sounds like it wants to release but can't this will solve the problem.

Question Tailgates doesn't close unless manually

My liftgate on my 2008 GL 450 opens with the fob, opens with the indoor switch and opens using the outside handles. It opens in every way possible. It will NOT close with the fob or the indoor switch. I have to close it manually. When closing it manually, you do hear the motor run as it latches (it does latch).

The problem is with closing it either with the fob or the indoor switch on the door. It opens just fine with the fob and door switch.

What could close it not to close (go down) either by fob or door switch but NOT OPEN. According to the dealer it needs hydraulic fluid but they've lied to us before and we don't want to pay for a fake or very temporary repair.

Any ideas?
