Upgrade Backup Camera Grid Lines

I have a 2008 GL450 and i would like to have the Grid lines appear in the backup camera. Is there a way to upgrade for the grid lines through software upgrade or any other way?

I am guessing that unless you are a good hacker there is no way.

Best way is to rip out the out dated piece of junk M-B provides and put in a Kenwood or other nav/camera unit with a GOOD used interface and usable features. It was outdated by 4 years when the vehicle was new!

Sounds like way too much work for DIY. Have you done this to your vehicle already?

I may be incorrect, but I thought the lines were something integrated in the actual camera. For example, I installed a backup camera on my 05 Acura RL (with the appropriate interface, etc.) and the first camera had no lines and/or markings. I had some trouble with the brightness of the unit and someone on the Acura forum recommended a different camera. It turns out the second camera I installed had distance markers. This is NOT the unit I used, but gives you an idea:

Your last sentence is so poignant. It's good to know one's self.

No- because the head unit isn't broke yet. But I guarantee it won't ever be repaired when it does break. I DO use a stick-on-the-windshield Magellan for nav purposes even though the factory nav works as perfectly (or not) as it ever did. Currently there is no user data in the factory unit because it is way too much trouble to replace all that info after the latest voltage drop data drop out.
The sat antenna DID crap out (no signal) and rather than pay the dealer $2100 for a replacement multifunction antenna I dropped $400 [installed] at Cartoys for an aftermarket sat radio that I can move from car to car. It works better than the factory sat unit too!
Perhaps you can tell that I am not a big fan of the quality or user interface of the Mercedes electronics. It would be difficult to find electronics that are NOT better.

Seems some cameras do have the line built in. Guess it would be up to your creativity to disassemble the factory camera and install an aftermarket one.

It seems that going through the removal of the camera/ installing a new one and redoing all of the wires seems much more of an ordeal to go through. I would prefer that it were a software upgrade. Much easier process.

It is not just the camera. The line- drawing software interfaces with the steering angle sensor in the steering rack to curve the lines accordingly.

Camera elements are fairly universal, so the wiring and all may not need to be changed (Depending on how integrated the camera is into the electronics and how handy you are)

No, you wold not get the fancy bending lines, just the fixed ones, but better then nothing if you feel you need (or want) them.

On my 09 the lines showed up after a dealer software update.

Maybe the same for an 08.
