Front Airmatic failure and repair.

First front strut was covered under warranty but second one was out of warranty, so I went with Arnott. So for around 400.00 bucks and about hour and half labor (my first time), I was abe to change the strut. I think dealer cost is about 1600 for everything but did not even ask them.

I now have a ABS/ESP warning and used STAR to check the code. It may be a left rear wheel speed sensor or wheel bearing. I found that having a STAR unit, can save a ton of money and headachs for these little codes. The GL had about 10-15 fault codes , even though most do not show up, so was nice to test and clear them all.

Anyone have to change wheel bearings yet, with under 60K miles?

How many miles did you have on it when you lost the first front strut?

How about the second one?

Where did you get your STAR program from? Ebay?

shock is 1200 retail or thereabouts. 2 hours @ 150/hour... that is what the dealer will charge you.

the esp/abs problem might be a coincidence - weak batteries tend to throw that code.

60k miles for bearings is not typical. i have seen only one go bad on the gl trucks and it was at 140k miles.

Thanks for sharing. Nice to read these stories rather than "I just left the dealer with a $1500 bill - so glad I have a warranty".

I just replaced a leaking airmatic PUMP. Cost me $370 delivered and 30 minutes to change. Meant to do a DIY but life got in the way and had no time.

I agree about the STAR. I plan to get one in the next few months.

GL450
My 07 GL450 had a slow leak in the front passenger strut for about three weeks. It failed completely yesterday at 101k miles. The dealer quoted $1400 to replace it with MB rebuilt unit. They quoted $900 for the parts only for one strut? I plan to replace both front struts with Arnott units at $450 each. Anybody have experience with the Arnott product?

Forum members can save save an additional 10% off (up to $75) if purchasing from Arnott by using the code MBSAVE12 during checkout. Not good on core deposit, shipping or taxes (if any). Also, check out the
available online at YouTube and off the Arnott web site.

There can be air leaks but usually, it is just the next strut or air bag that has not been replaced.
