GL Rear Entertainment Systems Question

Hello all,

I'm looking to purchase a 2007-2012 model year GL, likely a 550 but also considering a 450. Many of the models I see available for sale in my range are 2008s and 2009s.

I see that Mercedes made a change in the RES style for these two years. My question is what monitor size is the 2008 model and what's the resolution? Same question for the 2009 model, size and resolution.

I like the flush look of the 2008 headrests but the 2009 screen looks to be more high resolution. Can anybody provide input? Thanks.

06-08 are 7" 640X480 (standard def). 09+ are 8" screens. I'm not sure on resolution but I think they changed it to a widescreen aspect ratio. There's still no HD inputs, though so you to me it's still likely standard def (as there's no way to utilize a higher res screen).

I've had a 2008, 2009 and now a 2011 GL450. The biggest difference between the 2008 and the 2009 is in the 2008, the headphones are wired, yes wired. The 2009 and up are wireless. That alone over resolution and screen size made a difference to me. Wired headphones just seem so dated

Keep in mind, though, that you can still used wired headphones on the newer systems (which I personally prefer).

Thanks for the explanation. I would highly prefer wireless headphones so I'll stick with looking for a 09+.

Also keep in mind that 08's and earlier can only play one signal at a time on both screens. 09's and up can play different sources on each screen. VERY useful when your kids are sperated by 4 years, LOL

Very smart! Show him a nice $120,000 vehicle and then when you approach him for a $85,000 vehicle he'll think he's getting a bargain.

You were lucky to see that GL63 - I think there's been only 2-3 in the US, many have had them on order forever and may not see them until MY14 now. The X166 is in pretty high demand.

That's incorrect. I have the 07 system and can play two different inputs simultaneously.

I think in "07 and "08 there were two different systems. A Dealer installed system and a "Factory" (probably Depot or Port) installed system.

I looked at a dozen GL's today and I can't get any used car dealer to answer this question...hopefully someone here can help.

Those GL's with the rear screens - (assuming factory OEM) - do they all have DVD players?

The first two I saw had a pop out DVD player in the box in between the front two seats. The second two I saw had this missing. There was DVD nav & CD behind head unit and a 1-5 (or 6) Optical drive in the glove box that pop's up and down. They didn't know if that was CD or DVD.

Before I buy one sight unseen, I need to know what to look for.

Thanks,
Erik

Early model factory DVD was under the right side rear seat.

There is a little slide open door where you fee are.

GL450 Factory Rear DVD

N-Jay is correct. My 2007 GL450 has the factory rear entertainment and CD changer. The DVD player is located under the passenger side rear seat. hidden behind a sliding door. There is a DVD slot and two sets of aux inputs. The two screens can select between the three sources (DVD, Aux 1, or Aux 2). Also, a neat feature is the main audio system can play the Aux 1, Aux 2, or DVD sound through the main speakers.

Since the CD changer eliminates the MP3 aux input from the glove box, I use the aux inputs on the DVD player to play my music through the factory stereo. It is quite cumbersome, but it does work.

Thank you both. So essentially any factory screen setup should have a DVD player somewhere in the vehicle. Good to know.

Thanks,
Erik

If you're looking for any pictures or anything, I have a 2011 GL550 here with RES that I can snap a few pics for you if you'd like, or get you any info on.

When I was shopping I saw one that had a DVD player in the screen unit behind each headrest. I don't know if it was aftermarket or a dealer installed option. It was obviously not the factory/port installed option.

Measurement for 2011 GL video screens?

Can someone please measure their video screens if you have a newer GL and post the dimensions here? I am looking for the entire dimension - the screen plus the plastic housing around it.

thank you!

gl450 RES under back seat with CD changer in glove Aux Input not working

How does exactly Aux Input work on 2008 GL450 with Remote Enetertainment System (RES) under the back seat and CD changer in the glove? My RES DVD under the seat works fine. I get the audio from main speakers also. I bought the car used and the previous owner does not know how to use external input on RES Aux input 1 and 2. When I click on Sys or Aux1 and Aux2 buttons there is no response form the screen. If the DVD is in there those buttons presss track buttons under the remote flap. The remote I have has the bottom flips open. The top has Disc/TV/Aux1/Aux2/on-off/Sys buttons and when opened has numbers 0-9 *, # butttons. Please help.

I'm having the exact same problem. No response when I click on Sys, Aux1, or Aux2. Note that these buttons are on the top of a flap that is actually mechanically pressing a number button (4 or 6 in the case of Aux1 or Aux2). Is there some sort of switch in the flap that senses open or closed, and could this switch be bad?

GL450 (ML430 Sold)(240D Sold)
GL450 RES 7" with dark screen

I ordered a new remote to try to get the sound to play throughout the entire vehicle...
Also hoping the remote can adjust brightness, otherwise I need to get a new screen or a rebuild service?

Would be nice to just have iPad dock so I can play that throughout the vehicle rather than outdated electronics.

solution yet?

Have you find a solution yet? I am still out of luck. I am ready to remove a CD changer in glove to get an external input. Any other ways to get external input?
