I did not like the ride of the Good Year 275-50-20 run flats.
Went to a 285-60-18, much better ride.
1st Coopers then Latitude Tour HP (at twice the price)
Both only good for 25,000 before they became to slick in the rain here in the NW.
I do not "hot rod" around.
I think 5,500+ lbs and great handling for an SUV comes at a price
btw: I switch to studded snow tire in the winter, 265-65-18

I guess all the people claiming they getting 30K+ miles is ignoring the noise these tires makes. Even small kids can figure whats that humming noise...
1) If you need Quiet tires :- Conti
2) If you are ok with little noise and needs to go longer with thread wear then it is Hankook...
Other than than Michellin and Dunlop both seems to be a summer tire, if you compare it on Tirerack.com.
And Pirellis is JUNK....

I have a very stock GL350 in which i am about to start towing a Airstream. I have a worn set of the stock Goodyear LS-As which are the run flats. I am trying to get a little better wear rating and a bit more tire weight capacity for just extra security and came across the Goodyear Eagle 275 55/20 which is just a tad taller but the tires are a 1/3rd the cost of the run flats ...
Speaking of extra weight capacity, have you considered a LT265/60-R20 on the rears? I am unsure of wheel well clearances but the load rating (3195lbs) would be higher and inflation pressure (81PSI) would handle a heavier load, maybe an offset correction?

I just replaced my tires this week. I have 39,500 miles on my 2010 GL350 Bluetec.
I got the Bridgestone tires from America's Tires, plus the additional $35 insurance. It's half the price of the Goodyear Eagle.
I had to change one of the tires when the car was less than a year old. It cost me $500. Yikes! About twice after, the other tires had nail problems and I just took it to a smaller tire shop who fixed it for me for $12. Whew!
So far, I don't see much difference with the Bridgestone tires. I'll be taking it on a 500-mile road trip tomorrow and will find out more.
I figured, in about 2 years, perhaps more run-flat tires will be available in the market....hopefully Michelin... and I can invest in that.

30-day update with the Continental
It's been a little bit over a month since I got the Continental. I took a 500-mile roadtrip from California - Arizona with the new tires, and didn't feel a difference. So as far as how it rides, it made no difference between Goodyear Eagle VS Continental.
As far as length of wear and tear, I'm hoping that by the time my tires need to be replaced once again, there will be more choices and competitive prices in the market.
Saving $1,000+ is a big deal.
PS: I got my tires at America's Tires and purchased their extra $26 insurance. I have a friend, who also owned run-flat tires, and swears by their service. I was very happy with their service.

Tires MB 2011 GL550
My gl450 does fine, roughly 45K miles out of a set. My understanding on the 550's is that yes they do eat tires a little faster. Combination of a lot of hp, wide tires and all wheel drive and the fact that people with 550's tend to drive them a little harder.
Combine that with a relatively obscure tire size with limited options that tend to be soft tires that wear fast and it's pretty normal to see 15k to 20k miles. A buddy of mine with a 550 was having similar issues and bought new wheels and tires to go to a more common size and went with some Michelins with a 65K warranty. He's at about 35K right now and they are holding up far better than previous tires but down to about 30/35% and probably won't make it to 65, but he'd be ecstatic seeing 50 which is pretty likely.

I just replaced the tires on my 2010 GL450 with a new set of Toyo Versado CUVs. I got 37K miles out of the first set. These tires are a little hard to find (Tire Rack doesn't carry them), but they are quiet for a M&S, decent in moderate snow/ice and wear well for such a large and heavy vehicle.

Replaced my Dunlop SP Sport 5000 265/60-18 at 40k miles.
Rotated F-R at about 20k miles. I do diligent monitoring of tread depth. I also use tread depth to calibrate the inflation pressures. I found 40 front, 45 rear is the way to go. The tire wear I got was amazingly even as a result. I think I got to within 1k miles of the absolute limit.
SP Sport no longer made in that size, so I went with something else. Tire Rack (which is the only place I get tires) had Kumho Ecsta STX. They have a undirectional tread pattern. They were a bit noisy at first but are now quite nice.
I'm cheap, too. These tires cost me $622 delivered.

I've gotten about 25k miles out of my Continental's on my GL550. They are an ultra high performance tire. That fact, combined with the built in European style alignment burns tired quickly. For my next set I'll be getting MB knock off 20x10" wheels with 295/45r20 tires, all for less than another set of the current tires at $1700. Then I'll have a wider array of much cheaper tires to choose from.

I currently have 57K miles on my 2011 GL 550; on my second set of tires and would really like to know what type rim & size tire your buddy changed to on his Mercedes GL550. My car is a beast & love the handling and speed she gives me, but tired of spending the cash on her tires.
Thanks
Thanks
I am also not interested in paying the high tire price for the 21" tires.
I went to 20" Reps and 295/45/20 yokohama parada spec-x, good ride good looks save a lot. Next set of tires will be around mid to high $600s, you can even get michelins in that size for about $700 with road hazard warranty.

Where did you guys find a good set of 20" wheels? Would you mind posting some pictures too?
We are a couple of months away from needing new tires on our GL550 and I'm thinking of trying what you did.

I got a set of cheap Chinese tires from http://www.onlinetires.com for about $550 for four. I picked them up to save on shipping and then had them installed at Econo Tires in Stanton, CA for $50. If you live in So Cal this is by far the cheapest option. The last set of Nitto tires I had went about 30k miles and were noisy. The WinRun tires I got are pretty quiet so far, 4k miles on them now.

Had Michelin HP Tour 295/40/22 and they were awesome, very soft ride with low to minimum noise. Michelin and Conti were on back order with no ETA, so went with new Pirelli's 305/40/22 today with new set of wheels from Mandrus Mannheim's with a 10.5 width. They do not rub and were professionally installed by Discount Tires who have to meet DOT and manufacturer regulations for 22" rims. Initial review on the Pirellis is that they are good, but too early to conclude as i just installed them today.
If anyone is looking for a used 22 Inch Wheels as a replacement let me know. Will post pics of before and after soon.

Am at 33k miles with my Pirelli Scorpion 275/50R20 tires and am thinking they should be getting close to replacement. Have had no problem with them, most driving is highway and there still seems to be some decent tread left. Passed MB state inspection in July when wheels had their annual rotation. After reading some of the posts here am wondering what I am doing right. Don't want to jump the gun with replacement if not necessary. I live in Maine but am heading to FL for the winter just after the 1st.

I see Michelin has a brand new tire called the Premier LTX and has the 275/50/20 size available. It comes with a 60,000 mile warranty. I have the Bridgestone run flats on my GL now and they looked really good at 20,000 miles but at 25,000 all of a sudden they are wearing really fast. I think I might bite on the new Michelins. They are pretty inexpensive (around $270 per tire here in Atlanta) compared to the other options. I have always had great luck with Michelins on my other vehicle and the warranty can't be beat.

I picked up a set of Latitude Tour HP in 285/50/20, so its one size up. I got a good deal ($180 per tire) so i jumped on it. Tires will be going on the truck in next couple of weeks.

I had the continentals when I bought my 550, and the vehicle would pull around the road badly with any grooving. Was so bad my wife didn't like driving it. Besides, the conti's seem to be wearing fast. I switched to a set of 22" wheels with Yokohama Parada Spec X. Got about 40,000 km on it since that, the wear is not bad. The only thing I noticed is more wear on the inside of the tires, seems to be both front and back, front a little worse. It looks like I should be able to get up to about 80,000 km on this set before the insides are too worn out. Overall, not too bad. They are bit noisier then the conti's, but I would never use those again. I have 21" winters, and these seem to be ok as well, but far less mileage to judge by.
