Keyless Go Question

This may be a dumb question, but I can't find a definitive answer.

I'm interested in buying a 2011 GL450. If it has Keyless Go, did it originally come with 2 smart keys and 2 smart cards standard?

I can't seem to find what comes with the vehicle standard and what is extra.

Thanks,
Ryan

What are smart cards? I have a 2010 C63 with keyless go and it comes with 2 smart keys and a keyless button that you plug into the ignition switch.

Egad...I got a question to a question

On the Motor Trend site, it states options for 2011 GL450 with keyless go include "smart card/smart key". I googled the smart card and it looks like a thicker credit card sized device. That's all I know.

I'm looking to see if you get both standard or just one or the other with the option.

Thanks,
Ryan

You will definitely get the Smart Key. I checked online and no mention of the Smart Card but it will be a back up convenience item. You cannot start the car if the card battery goes dead and does not have a valet key.

keyless go

credit card sized pieces of plastic that substitute for the bulky key. With the card on your person (wallet/purse/etc) -
touch the door handle to unlock/lock and
depending on the car model, to start/stop
touch the top of the gearshift knob or push the start button non the dash

This is all explained in the OPS manual.

It is a fantastic feature

No 'card' fitting this description is/was ever available on any GL I ever saw.

When Mercedes first introduced the keyless go feature with the SL models more than ten years ago they provided a smart card. It was a credit card shaped keycard that all the driver had to do is keep it in their possession. Although cool idea, it proved to be a terrible one... When the card battery died, the driver had no way to start the car! They quietly replaced them with smart keys shortly after that.

No card was ever offered on the GL or any of the latest models AFAIK

Now I know what the "card slot" between the two cup holders in the front row was designed for.
