Yes or No to Extended Warranty GL Class (X164)
Hi, I bought a 2011 GL 450 4 months ago. It still has 3 months left in the original manf warranty.
Should I buy extended warranty? 7 years 75000 miles for $3800 from 1 of the MB dealer. I will shop around.

Even more important - Is the extended warranty from Mercedes Benz? If it is not then it is NOT a worthwhile expense.

As a matter of fact, I am almost positive your extended MB warranty is probably underwritten by one of the "aftermarket" companies that would sell you the exact same product directly for a lot less...

We must agree to disagree then. I cannot attest to ALL non manufacturer extended warranties being junk since I haven't tried them all. But I DO know that the forums and blogs are full of complaints about warranty non coverage and most of then (where the warranty company is identified) are NOT the manufacturer's own warranty.
I also know that even dealers are under pressure to sell non manufacturer warranties because they, the dealers make a lot more money than from the branded ones.
The financial advice radio personalities I sometimes listen too [Clark Howard] also stress that too often warranty companies simply "bust out". This means that when the claims get too expensive they simply cease business and change names - taking their money with them. Since the car maker obviously has hopes of seeing you as a repeat customer and therefore has a name to protect, changing names is not an option. Thus the mfg. own warranty is more likely to be there when you need it. And that is what a warranty is all about anyway.
I'm sure there are SOME extended warranty companies that are honest and have integrity. But it isn't possible to tell which ones until after you buy and make a claim. Too may are NOT ethical and that spoils the market for all.
Back on the personal experience track - I got a cold call this morning from someone selling an extended warranty. The first thing I asked was if he had ever heard of the national do-not-call-list? Next question - does he ever check it because I am on it? He hung up! That told me all I need to know about his integrity and made a strong inference about the industry in general.
If you have a good extended warranty company - GREAT, keep it. But most of us can't tell the good from the bad and there are lots of bad out there.

I disagree completely. There are legitimate warranty companies that I have personally used that are excellent and I would argue better than what MB is selling.

Everybody's experience is different, but mine paid for itself several times over. I'd guess the work done under warranty was in the $10-15K range. I wouldn't own a late model German CPO without one.

I would never and never have bought a "daily driver" MB that was not CPOd, and did not have an extended CPO warranty.
In 9 months of owning my GL, which I paid $3200 for the 3/135 warranty, it's had a wheel sensor, power steering pump, front struts, rear struts, cam seal, and a wheel wheel bearing.
That's $6000-$8000 in free warranty work in the first 9 months, with over 2 years and 50k to go.
Is the MB-backed extended warranty worth it? You tell me cowboy!

I recently purchased an 09 GL550 CPO and purchased the extra 2/unlimited CPO Warranty. 2 months after purchasing it it failed a state inspection (bought it out of state) for a leaking rear shock absorber. Local MB dealer said it's not CPO covered, Florida MB dealer from which I bought it sent me a memo that they say says the shocks are covered (but which is so poorly worded it can easily be read as a yes or a no)
MBUSA customer care is now involved, and yesterday contacted me after a few days of investigation and ended up telling me the part will probably be covered, probably will see a change to the "computer" to have it indicate it's a covered part, and to expecte a call in an hour with the good new. Call never came...
Great truck, but some heartburn from the long distance purchase

As to the above 2 posts...
Yes, MBCPO warranty. I suppose you might buy a non-mfr extended warranty for a Honda or Ford, but I would never consider such for an MB, ESPCIALLY something like a $$$$GL$$$$
The rears were leaking. The car was sitting on its *** 2 days out of the week when parked. CPO will cover them ONLY if they fail a leak test AFAIK. I suppose Your Dealer May Vary. If they aren't covering it, I'd complain loudly

I had a third party warranty for my 2004 S55, doesn't get much more expensive to repair unless you step up to the 12 cylinders. Fidelity Platinum laid out over $15K in repairs over 4 years, with very little delay, so I'm not a CPO-only buyer.

It was quite the ordeal, as well. Field reps and CPO managers came to the dealership to review and discuss. My understanding is that they determined that an error had been made in the system that service departments use as the final word for coverage. Apparently the shocks were excluded but should not have been, and I have been told that a correction to the system is coming. All this because of lil' ol' me!
It's been two weeks and no notice of the change has been sent to me, like I requested, so hopefully my no-sunshine area is not full of smoke.

Where did you buy the aftermarket extended warranty
I had an aftermarket warranty on my GL450 that was as good or better than the MB extended warranty. It all depends on the company. There are really bad ones out there and some really good ones. The company I used no longer writes anything on MB anymore. They took huge losses on those policies. I had an unlimited mileage 4 year plan. Since I drive a lot, the plan was perfect for me.

Time sometimes is your best friend.
Recently purchased a 2014 GL, back on to this great forum to share my experience. Happened to see this old thread.
I feel I made the right decision of not buying extended warranty even though I change maybe a record of my air suspension 8 times. I repeated 8 times!! However, only if you did what I did by buying the unlimited lifetime warranty shocks, which saved my ***.
This experience also helped me convinced the salesman to leave me alone when he tried to sell me their warranty program.
