Rear Tail Light unit

Rear Tail Light unit
This is the second 2010 GL450 that I have owned (both used) that has had rear turn signal error (intermittently). Dealer says the whole tail light has to be replaced at $400. Does anyone know if this is a common problem? First vehicle had about 55k miles on it and this has 70k when the problem started. I don't mind paying to have this fixed just seems odd that two separate vehicle had the same problem. Shouldn't LED lights last longer than 5 yrs, especially on a turn signal that is hardly ever on. Should I ask the dealer to see if there would be any MB goodwill on this problem.
Thanks

May I suggest you find a MB Independent mechanic in your area to get a 2nd, 3rd opinion. With our current cars being so computerized, I'd expect just the bulb to be out, not the entire lighting assembly unit.
In my humble opinion, the "stealer" will tell you that the "entire" unit is bad to justify the high repair price quote.
All in all, it could just be the bulb and you get it fixed at an Independent mechanic for a fraction the price of the stealership (or maybe free because it's an easy fix).

Funny, mine is a 2010 and the right directional started the same shenanigans a few weeks ago. It flickers when i should be blinking. It is the entire bank of LEDs in unison, so the LEDs themselves aren't the problem. It is clearly a control chip or something like it.
The unit is an assembly, and they aren't doing anything but replacing the part itself, nothing shady about the $400 quote. That is what the taillight assembly costs.
I will be pulling mine out in the next few days and seeing whats up. My hunch is a control chip on the assembly.
Stay tuned.
Anyone else run into this?
