Headlight went out one at a time on the wife's car. Got around to replace them yesterday, when I turned the lights on everything was working fine.Though, the "bad" ones didn't look damaged, so I connected them a battery and observed both of them light up. This evening she came home and her headlights are off again... Is there a fuse or is there something else going on?

NOT a fuse or they wouldn't have worked later for you - perhaps a circuit breaker reset itself? but only a dealer would know if yours is equipped with circuit breakers in the headlight circuit. Undoubtedly a connection or grounding issue somewhere - perhaps a computer glitch.
Get the car electrical scanned (at a dealer?). That MAY narrow the trouble search.
