Engine Air Duct Replacement Question
My dealer is warning me that one end of the engine air duct leading to the turbo in my GL320 CDI (89,000 Miles) is badly frayed and should be replaced ASAP. Cost is about $700 (one hour labor, $580 part). I believe the part is :

The price is very high apparently because the air mass sensors are integrated into the part.
I looked on this forum but did not see much mention of this issue. Is it common? Is it as critical as the dealer suggests it is? Any suggestions?

Well, there's no way to say if it's as critical as the dealer says without seeing it or having a better description of the issue. However, if for some reason it has some type of "holes" in it from the fraying, then that will let unfiltered air into the turbo and engine... which, of course, would certainly be critical. Although, I'm not sure I understand how that piece gets "frayed"?

Apparently it can get frayed as it is removed and replaced, which it was in the process of the dealer replacing the Glow Plugs (for another $1K+ )

Take a look at the link below, it is from a dealer near me Keenen Mercedes. The link is to their online parts catalog, they have the same part for $340.00 I use them for a few things that are dealer only, they are reasonable and good people to deal with. I have no affiliation, I've just had good experiences with them. Hope this helps.

Holy crap! I just looked up the price of a glow plug through the link that Dan supplied. I just recently bought this GL320, but I'm used to paying $12/glow plug! I am HOPING that these plugs are MUCH more advanced than the ones I'm used to with other diesels... although I'm struggling to figure that part out. I mean, it heats up, then it turns off -- end of story. There must be something I'm missing?
