repairing/replacing transfer case

has anyone taken their transfer case in to be rebuilt?

it seems these have been issues for a lot of people

my 2008 gl320 is having problems too and i would like to know the various repair situations and where to possibly buy a quality remanufactured one with warranty

ideally i would have it rebuilt and beefed up to prevent future problems...

any help would be great

There was a good write up on transfer case removal and reinstallation on here but you'd have to search it, I don't know where it is. If I remember right the top two bolts were said to be impossible without swivels and extensions. I think the author got a salvage yard box to replace it with.

yeah, i found that thread
it was a good write up

will talk to my differential shop on monday and see if they think it can be rebuilt

my truck only has 77, 000 miles on it
and although it is new to me it is in excellent shape and has extensive records/repairs with the dealer

not seeing where transfer case fluid was changed but since mercedes does not list this as one of the services etc am not surprised

will definitely be changing mine every 40, 000 with the trans

but since mine is relatively low miles and has failed i would rather not buy a salvage unit unless it is the only option

did see a remanufactured one for 1800 on ebay but no warranty

sent out numerous emails to shops listed on the internet for mercedes transfer case sales

i will keep this thread up to date on what i find for sale etc and end up doing
