Source for GL350 Fuel Filters?

I'm about to replace my diesel fuel filter. I cannot find the Mann WK 820/14 in stock anywhere. It retails for about $60, and looks to be the exact same part as the Mercedes 6420905352 which is pushing $130 at my local dealer.

Has anyone found a good online source for GL350 diesel fuel filters?

Thanks Marc - except that's not the right part. The GL350 needs the filter with the 5 pin heater and sensor built in... It looks like this...

You just take it off the old filter and fit it to the new one. You don't need to replace that every time.

There are 4 different variants of fuel filter - the one I posted there is the most common it seems. Have you confirmed based on your VIN?

Here is the exact same one you posted, except that you reuse the sensor/heater. I'm pretty sure that filter version wasn't used until MY2013.

Mahle KL 490 /d1

Mahle makes the same filter only 0.5 cm taller, therefore it will hold more water before light goes on. $19 BUCKS! I keep one in my trunk next to the AdBlue tank and a pair of clik clamps, Phillps screwdriver, 8mm, 10mm socket wrench.

Fascinating. I had no idea you could remove and reuse the heater and sensor - they are built into the standard part Mercedes sells. That is a great tip.

Marc does it just pop straight out / up? Or do you twist to remove? Assume there is an o-ring sealing it - have you been replacing or reusing?

Remove the two torx screws and turn the sensor clockwise until the tabs that the screws go into are free, pull sensor strait up it is about 3-1/2" long, their are two O-rings on it they both need to be replaced. They come with the new filter. Re-install is reverse.

I believe the OP has already done his fuel filter change but for anyone who find this in the future you are giving bad advice. The newer versions of the OM642 do NOT use the filter and sensor that you are describing. The filter the OP posted is the correct filter. It has a fixed five wire sensor, not a removable 3 wire sensor and usually can be had for $70 - $120. See the picture below for the newer fuel filter.

... The OP looked at his filter and saw that the sensor is built-in and non-removable... I put in new main and auxiliary batteries instead last weekend, and this weekend I'm changing out the fluid in the diffs and transfer case. Still looking for the $70 source for the fuel new filter - that's what the Mann WK 820/14 generic variant of the OEM filter goes for, but no one has them in stock that I can find.

there are two kinds of filters on the 350 - the old cheap one with removable sensor and the new style with non- removable sensor. the old style is about $30. the new style is anywhere between $60-120 depending on where you buy it from

Alx - the original point of this thread was that I need the new fancy style for my truck - and I'm struggling to find Mercedes OEM filters of this style for under $110 including tax and shipping. The Mann Filters are more like $60, but no one I can find has them in stock. Can you point me to a source for the new style filters in the $60 range?

$60 is probably unrealistic unless you start shopping really sketchy places. Most of mine have been right around $100. I got my last one from here.

here is where i get mine from - mann 820/14 is the correct updated fuel filter. but please do cross check to see if part 6420906052 is the correct one for your application.

https://www.dieselfiltersonline.com/...420906052.html

i am not affiliated with that site in any form or shape, but they are a respected vendor in the diesel world.

edit: lol, it appears they are currently out of stock

You're correct about Mann WK 820/14 being the correct filter. It replaced WK 820/7. I also could not find the WK 820/14 anywhere online because of availability from Mann. I even called Mann directly and they have no guaranteed delivery date on them. They said "maybe" in June. I bit the bullet and bought an OEM from the MB dealer. Surprise... it was a Mann WK 820/14 for $185. OUCH!

Be careful. I had one well known online parts house tell be that the Mann WK 820/15 was also a valid replacement. I don't think so. Look at the plugged end cap. The 820/14 has a circlip holding the cap on. The 820/15 didn't. It had an "O" ring and plastic sleeve.

I wouldn't trust that around any kind of fuel pressure without verification from Mann. They haven't/won't respond to my email asking whether the 820/15 is a valid substitute for the 820/14. So beware of the WK 820/15 unless you have a confirmed source from Mann or MB.

That's an obscene amount of money for a fuel filter! Why on Earth would they design such an expensive consumable item like that?

To paraphrase a commercial that's playing here in the "States"..... "Because that's what they do". That filter looks to be around $90 - $100 online whenever it's available.

It has a built in fuel heater element. Not the removable one you're familiar with on older models. The later MB's had at least two versions. A three pin connector and a 5 pin connector. The 5 pin has the heating element built in (and non-removable).

The WK820/15 is most definitely NOT the same as the WK820/14.

The WK820/15 is the replacement for the WK820/6 - which is not the right part for our trucks.

The WK820/14 is the right part for our trucks that need the 5 pin connector.

Yes it's super confusing. But the end of the story is that if you have the GL350 with the 5 pin connector, the Mercedes part number is 6420905352 and the correct Mann filter is the WK820/14.

As of May 2016, the Mann version still seems to be out of stock everywhere, so we may be stuck with OEM for a while longer.

Stock has definitely dried up everywhere for that specific Mann assembly. For the memorial holiday I have lowered the price of the filter assembly to $99.99 for these. The filter includes free shipping, lifetime replacement warranty and unlimited returns. I show the only compatible OE numbers as:
  • 642 090 31 52
  • 642 090 53 52
  • 642 090 60 52

This is the direct link:

Have a safe holiday.
