722.9 Transmission Fluid Changes
The 722.9 transmission (GL) is supposed to have one fluid change at 40k miles, and none thereafter.
I did a little research that makes me think regular fluid changes are important to avoid the turbine speed sensor / valve body / conductor plate problems. Apparently contaminants in the fluid interfere with the electrical connections. These are fine particles that are not captured by the filter.
My local transmission shop will do a fluid / filter / gasket change for $290. Now, these add up; the conductor plate change costs about $2k, so seven fluid changes = that cost. The shop recommends fluid changes every 20k miles.
I screwed up and did not change the fluid until 88k miles, so frequent changes are probably more advisable in my case.
Any advice on the merits of frequent fluid changes, and at what interval?

I dont believe in this for life fluids, on 100K my torque converter went off, so did rebuild and replaced all aluminum parts with steel parts, and fluid was nasty, so tranny flush after two oil changes is very important in my opinion.

You are overthinking it. Change it at 40k and then at each 50k give or take.
Also, Unless you remove the valve body and also drain the tq converter you are changing only about 1/2 of the fluid anyway.
The turbine sensor failures are not related to old fluid. Rough shifting however is.

Life time transmission fluid was a huge marketing error. Resulted in a lot of failures on the 5 speed transmissions (722.6).
I had three cars with that tranny in them, and when I changed the fluid it came out black and burnt. 80,000kms (50,000 miles) seems to be a good change interval.
