Not sure if this is the proper way/location to introduce myself, but here goes:

I am new to the Mercedes world, but not so new to the German SUV offerings. I am coming over from a Cayenne that has become limited use in the seating department for my family. With our 4th child being recently born, it was time to do some looking at a replacement for the 5 seat Cayenne. Wanting to keep the newer car at a comparable build/comfort/performance level, it made sense to seek a GL as the new family wagon based on the 7 seat option. After looking a while, we came upon a slick looking 550 down in Virginia. After a drive down to the car location and checking things out and really liking the looks, we drove her home after paper signing.

I been lurking around this site for a while doing research on GL's and trying to get a feel for probable maintenance points that will come up. Figured instead of lurking without an account, why not create one and get more involved. I look forward to levering the knowledge you guys offer, as well as contributing to things I do to the GL in the future.

Welcome, I only know enough to be dangerous. Other people on this forum are quite knowledgeable though and I have learned a lot.

Same maintenance as any other vehicle. Don't use cheap motor oil. MB 229.5, Mobil 1 0W40 Euro Car, Amsoil 0W40 Euro Car. Good for 15,000 - 20,000kms between changes.

Change the transmission fluid every 80,000km (50,000miles).

Engine coolant is good for 10+ years.

If they use a lot of road salt where you live, I would recommend rust proofing.

Thanks for the welcome and tips. I been slowly gathering information to help me do the transmission fluid and filter change, transfer case fluid change, and the front and rear differential gear oil changes. The trans re-fill procedure looks exactly like what I had done on the Cayenne, as it requires a target temperature fluid pump in with cycling through the gear positions. I figure changing everything to get a baseline is the smart move to make on a new to me vehicle. I do have prior maintenance records, but nothing besides oil changes and brake fluid flushes appear to have been completed in the fluid department.
