GL wheel swap info (450/550)

Can you swap wheels/tires from a 450 to a 550? I am in the market for a 550, but care ZERO about the looks...just want a good riding tire that will LAST. I would assume the stock wheels/tires from a 450 would last much longer than the big wheel/tires on the 550...are the brakes the same size? I ask that since on some MB models, the bigger wheels are because of bigger brakes..obviously you wouldnt be able to swap smaller wheels in that situation.

Before you swap wheels, take a look at Onlinetires.com. There is a good selection of tires for the 550 and they will last much longer than the OE ones.

Personally, I prefer the 60-series 18" tires anyway, plus the tires are cheaper. I don't know why the tires would last longer, though.

Just in case you didn't already know it, you can get wheels for $100 delivered off Ebay; you need to add TPMS at $40 a wheel, plus mine didn't have center caps. So you're looking at about $150 per wheel, complete. Used wheels that do have TPMS may have low battery on the TPMS so may need replacement anyway.

The Pirellis and Continentals don't last long but the grip is very good. You can get tires with a higher tread wear rating now that others have started making the 21" sizes.
