Oil change- jack stands or ramps
Changing my oil this weekend, first time in this vehicle. Ramps or hack stands? I've also seen pour half oil into filter hole and half into oil fill hole. Why?

I don't have any trouble getting under mine without any lifting for oil changes. There's more than enough clearance to slide my container under the oil pan. Easy oil change other than taking off all the fasteners for the underbelly pan although air tools make that pretty quick.

The worst part about doing it from underneath is handling all the crud that has accumulated on top of the belly pan and in the grid soundproofing stuff.
I've always sucked it out of the top through the dipstick tube.

Ok, success. I have found out it's just the front belly pan, not the rear. It's quite easy to access really. I took both belly covers off and washed them both. The transmission cover had the sound proofing sponge on it. It's now trashed. The cover went back on though. Two rear most tranny pan cover bolts were stripped. I went up to 1/4-20 bolts. Oil filter cover was god aweful tight. All went well and I even reset the service minder.
One more thing, the sponge/sound proofing around the oil pan, that thing supposed to get oil on and in it and drip for 30 minutes after you're done? Crappy design and it didn't appear to be easily removable to avoid that.

I raise the vehicle with the air suspension and it gave me enough room. But, it's even easier now... and super simple with no mess. See this thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-...sing-them.html I added it at my last oil change to the GL.

This is how I fixed the problem with oil soaking into the oil pan cover:

+1 on using a topsider to suck the oil out through the dipstick hole. It get as much or more oil out than using the drain plug.
Mercedessource reports that using the drain plug leaves up to half a litre of oil in there:

I use a drill powered oil pump.
Pumps right into the bottles they pick up at the curb.
Sweet.
