Oil burner recall?
I have a 120k mile oil burning '07 GL 450, i. e. About a quart every 850 miles.
I watched some YouTube videos which documented Toyota, Lexus and Nissan performing oil consumption tests on cars of similar vintage and miles and doing free engine rebuilds or replacements to the owners long after the warranties were over.
Have any of you known Mercedes to do this?

I have over 200k miles and it doesn't burn oil. It would be very hard for MB to warranty an engine so far out. They do have real issues on some of their other engines and to the best of my knowledge they did very little for the consumer if it failed out of warranty. MB fights recalls with all their might. I would imagine that's due to the cost. They are very much a for profit corporation and rarely admit fault.

Is youtube now the definitive source of 100%, all the time, absolutely correct information?
I think for something to be a recall it would have to be a wide-spread, documented issue. An occasional issue here or there wouldn't be grounds for a recall, unless there was found to be an obvious manufacturing defect. But on a high mileage car out of warrant, and playing devil's advocate here, it would be easy to say that the reason could very well just be lack of maintenance.

Hopeless. MB will not do this outside of warranty.
If you want a car from a company that will rebuild the engine 60k miles out of warranty for excessive oil consumption, and in general, stand behind the longevity of the vehicle as regards major failures, get a Toyota or Lexus. I just received a similar notice on my HS at 120k miles.
With MB, your best bet is to do all of your maintenance at a single dealer, and hope that they do a goodwill repair. In general, your odds are poor.
German vehicles really don't hold a candle to Japanese as regards both actual reliability, and manufacturers willingness to stand behind the design. This is not a comment on looks/feel/performance, but it simply isn't close in terms of reliability longevity.

I will point out, that MB did take responsibility for the ML gasser balance shaft issues, after a judge refused to dismiss the class action lawsuit.
That's about the only way to get them to fess up to design flaws that impact their vehicles after warranty.
