GL 450 or GL 550

Okay, owned a 1st gen ML, then a 05' C class, then a 2012 GLK, then now I have a 2014 GLK.

Looking at GL 450 and GL 550 , all black for both. I know the GL550 has a better looking body kit, but man, when I see them in black, they both look like they are as good looking. Not really worth the GL550 I think.... I live on an island, and I really don't need to go anything over 55 or 60mph.

So, test drove one with distronic, really useless, unlike the E or S class where there is steering assist of lane keeping, GL doesn't have it, or at least the 2014 doesn't

2015 model coming in a couple of weeks. Basically just ECOSTOP, which I have on 2014 GLK, I think it is a joke, as it doesn't add any fuel efficiency except make me hotter on the tropical island while idle.

So, question really is, any GL450 owners out there to really have wished to have gotten a GL 550 except for better looks and slightly faster car with less mileage per gallon?

Thanks!

jtse

GL550 has a lot of the features standard that otherwise you have to customize in a GL450. That's my only thing, I consider mine pretty well built, but it's still missing leather, multi-contour seats, cooled seats, ADS, etc.

Lane Keeping assist is active lane keeping assist with Driver Assistance package which uses the brakes to keep the car in lane.

Not sure it matters to you, but a 2015 GL450 is a 6 cyl, the GL550 is 8 cyl.

I'm curious about your experience with lane tracking. I thought distronic must be ordered in the 997 package which has distronic cruise, active lane tracking, active blind spot, driver assist. Could it be it was configured just with option 233 - distronic?

I have the 997 package on my 2013 GL and it has active lane tracking with distronic.

Oh, yea, going for a 2014, is the way to go then for the V8 engine.

I'm talking about the E class actual steering assist, I thought it was available across all distronic plus system, but it turned out to be not the case. Steering assist works as if it is actively steering for you instead of just braking one wheel for you which isn't all that amazing if you think about it.
