Restrictions on buying GL450 out of state
Hello all,
I'm in the market for a GL450 and have found a couple of 2014 GL450s in neighboring states fitting our requirements. The car would be titled in Michigan but I am currently living part time in Chicago. We have purchased a couple cars out of state before, most recently a 2013 GLK350 near Chicago, with absolutely no issue. However I was told yesterday that I cannot purchase a GL450 out of state. Has anyone had any experience with this issue? Thanks for any advice!

I purchased one out of state (from Ohio, I live in NJ). Had no issue. I know there are restrictions on the GL350, but none on the 450.

Thanks, I didn't think the GL450s were restricted. Surprisingly enough, one dealer in Illinois said they don't sell GLs out of state and one in Wisconsin said they don't sell out of state period. The search continues...

the issue could very well be exporting. According to several dealers I spoke with they state they have to be protective about who they sell to and they check an export list of people or companies that they will not sell to because they tend to illegally export the vehicle. GLs and G wagon were the most popular models this was done with.

The 2015 GL450 - with the twin turbo 6 - has much lower duty in Asia and a good # of other destination export countries that charge much less import duty on 2015 GL450 6's versus the 2014 GL450 as a V8.
Mercedes has issued a specific high alert to all dealers - and with Fall/Winter deliveries to most dealers at same-even-less units last year - a good number of dealers will choose to barricade the issue/risk by selling to local market/state customers only.

Got it, thanks for the information. Luckily I'm in the market for a 2014 GL450, but it's proving to be difficult to track down one with the features I want, might be stuck ordering a 2015

A 2014 GL450... frankly kindof late for that... if you think you are going to order a 2015 - then frankly another week/two those are going to be real/real tight... higher # of committed pre-orders already than last year - and this years production numbers the same if not a bit less...
