285/40/22 or 305/40/22 for 2013 GL450

Just ordered new summer wheels 22x10 ET 45 for my 2013 GL450 and trying to decide between these two tire sizes. The 285/40 (11.22") is slightly narrower than the stock GL550 21" tire (11.61") and the 305/40 (12.01") is slightly wider. The offset and width of my new wheels are the same as GL550 oem 21's.

Looking for a beefier look without tires sticking out past fender flares. Recommendations appreciated on best tire size, or if there really is a major difference in look between the two, and pictures if you have them.

Seeing as the 305/40 will have a wider sidewall - I'm inclined to suggest that one. With a 22" rim, a little more protection can sometimes protect the rim - it's minor, but every little bit helps! Also, your speedo error will be approx 3 to 4 mph off... so going 60MPH on speedo will really be travelling at 63 MPH.

have had no issues and no rubbing... Pirelli Zero is the only tire.. and hard to find.

At first I was hesitant about the low profile.. but running 39lbs all the way around and driving on the streets of Brooklyn... haven't blown one out yet!

You have the wider wheel arches than my 450. Convernd with the tires looking too wide on my narrow body GL.

I have run both 305/35 and 305/40 on Pirellis on an HRE 22 * 11s, no rubbing issues.

the 305/40 feels a bit heavier and on hard lock turn, you are very close to inner fender.

hope that helps…

You just made me a happy man, I live in Brooklyn too and have a 2013 GL450 I been debating for months if I should buy 22z. Now its a done deal, Im order the 22x10 wheels and put on 285/40-22 tires. Sounds like a solid combo based on your specs.

I will come back and post pix once I get them installed.
