Advice on extended warranty

picking up our first GL450 (our 2016 preorder) this coming weekend. Is it true that we can purchase extended warranty from any dealer? If so, any recommendations on which has the best deal? What's a good range of cost to expect? I don't want to be screwed when we pick up the car and end up paying too much for extended warranty. Should we just get the warranty separately before we pick up the car or after?

TIA!

Congrats and if you gonna keep your car for 7 years then Extended warranty is a must and its called ELW can only be bought by first owner and it usually runs for 3Yr\100K for $3000 and this is the price for GL550 not sure about GL450 but the best pricing you can get for ELW is from MB Of Austin 90% dealers can't beat that guy's price.....And once you get the car you can buy it within a month I believe without penalty added to the cost and after a month before the 4Yr/50K expiry for 5 or 15% extra not sure about that...

But make sure you only get ELW from Mercedes not XYZ thief company, once you buy the warranty it will get updated into the Mercedes system.

Thanks

A gaggle of MB's
So you are aware - you can choose to extended the mercedes New car Warranty at any time before your 4yr/50K mile new car warranty expires - up to last day or 49,999 miles - whichever comes 1st.

The Mercedes dealer cost of the warranty day of purcahse stays the same up to 30 days from date of purchase - after 30 days from date of purchase the MB dealer cost of the warranty goes up 5% - and retail pirce of the warranty goes up 15% (a bit more wiggle room).

Frankly - extended new car warranty - the vast majority of that money goes to Mercedes - delaer margin on the extended new car warranty is low - a bit of wiggle room, not much.

If the Finance guy is sharp - if financing thru MBFS - the extended new car warranty can be treated as 0% and be evenly amortized over the term of the note.

For most states - when added at time of purchased warranty is taxed at same rate as the vehcile - and if added later most states charge retail sales tax, which for most states can be a couple of pts higher on tax.

"Unused extended warranty" is 100% refundable if you choose to sell or trade early.

You can check the MSRP for the extended new car warranty with the dealer.

With a good dealer - and a good Finance guy - the extended new car warranty presentation should be smooth and understandable.

See if you can get it cancelled and repurchase it from another dealer who is offering you cheaper rate. Couple of calls could save your $1500

The key word here is "unused". You only get the cost of your warranty back less any claims or the prorated amount based on the time or miles left on the warranty, what ever is the least. So, if you incur $3900 in claims following the factory warranty terminating and you trade your vehicle at 4.5 years and you had purchased the ELW for $4,000, you are only going to get $100 back.

With my 09, I traded it at 5 years with 2 years remaining on the warranty and I got $0 back...

Not true. I was told the same. I ended up canceling and purchased it from another MB dealer for far less. ELWs are negotiable, as with any optional purchases!

What about buying the ELW warranty on a CPO car? I was quoted $3495 for a 24 month\unlimited. Do they offer 3yrs for CPO's well?

My understanding is the max on a CPO is 2 additional years on top of CPO (factory 4yr + 1yr CPO unlimited miles). This ends up the same amount of years available for ELW except you get unlimited miles vs 100 max and a few items in ELW that's not covered in CPO(not sure exactly what).

Ive been getting quotes for the "84mos/100k" ELW Option.
Most dealerships say the cost is $4750 for "84mos/100k" Option.
Those dealerships claim that this is the set price no matter where I go. Is that correct?

A few other dealerships I contacted, out of state, have offered $4550.00 (California) and $4000 (Georgia).

This leads me to believe that the $4750 is NOT a set price if other dealerships are offering lower prices. What do you all think?

Also, what is a reasonable price for
"84mos/100k" ELW Option? What have you all recently paid for the "84mos/100k" ELW Option? Please share.

Try this guy. I just purchased an ELW 7/75,000 warranty for a ML 350 Bluetec. He is very easy to deal with and will give you his cost and markup for the warranty (at least he did for me). I believe I paid $3200+ tx for the 7/75000 ELW but that was for an ML. I bought it for $200 over cost. You will obviously pay more for a GL and a 7/100,000 mi warranty.

2013 GL450
I just purchased a 6yr/100k extended warranty for my 2013 GL450 that was close to being out of the factory warranty. I used with Marc Rose of WI Simonson Mercedes. Get all your pricing first as his will be the last you'll need. Great price fast service over the phone! You can reach him at 818-266-4305.

Mercedes has crazy rules. If you are the second owner and purchase your car from a MB dealer, you can only get the CPO. You cannot purchase any ELW to extend as the second owner. IF you purchase the car from the first owner OR a NON MB dealer, you can then buy the 3 year 100k extra EWL for your car but the MB dealer must run your vin and confirm miles before giving you a price. I read up on all the other second and third part plans that appear good, go longer, etc BUT consumers who use them don't like the BS they have to go through to get denied on many claims ! I spoke to 10 mb finance guys, many pushed me to third party deals they probably make $ on. ONLY one offered the actual MB extension. Food for thought when shopping. If you buy new from the dealer, and within 30 days by the ELW you can go 3 yrs / 100 without extra $ in some states ( florida being one of them ) , or 2yrs / 75. Buy used from same dealer, NO ELW's can be purchased.

I extended on my S550v4 today 72/65 for $3200 in Florida for the true MB extended plan. Florida is regulated $ and went though a autonations dealership. In some states you have to pay an extra 600-675 if over 30 days since purchase of the car. Not FL.

I purchased a 5 year/125K extended warranty for my 2014 GL350 when I bought my car new. I paid about $3550. The MB dealership also had an option for 7 year/125K for a little more money. But given the amount of driving I do, I probably will pass the 125K in less than 5, so the 5 was the best option for me.

The length of time starts from the day the car was put into service, thus you purchased a 1 year extension to the 4yr 50k normal warranty, correct? Or did you buy the third party plan that starts after the 4yr 50k ? Two totally different plans and limitations, etc.

I purchased one year extension. For me, the time wasn't as important as the mileage. I needed the maximum amount of miles a MB warranty covers. I drive about 30-35K miles a year. So within 3 1/2 to 4 years from the day the car was placed into service, I would be around 125K if not more. Therefore, the 5 year/125K made the most sense to me. I think the maximum coverage the dealership offered was 7yr/125K from the first day of service.

Good choice because after researching all the third party extensions, most all were not worth the paper they were printed on when the time comes to actually use them. MB ext is the only way to go at ANY cost.

The MB extended warranty offered in 2016 is :
1 yr 2 yr 3yr extended from your 4yr 50k @ 75 or 100k max miles.
125K no longer offered unless you go third party ( something YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO Unless you don't have the choice due to age, miles, AMG, CPO etc ) )
