Tires: Better in Snow than Contis. Snow Chain advice too.

Looking to get some tires that perform much better than the Contis in snow. But, that can also serve as my year round tire.

Also, looking for advice on best chains for 19inch wheels on our GL350.

Hoping a praying for a good ski season and plan to be driving in the Sierra's and Southern Utah. However, we live in S. Cal and would prefer not to swap out tires for ski trips.

Thank you very much in advance!

I run snows on my 350 but highly recommend the Nokian WRG3 SUV tires for all season. I've used that tire on an A6 wagon I had and they were great. They are considered all-weather tires and have the severe service emblem on them. They handled very well in dry conditions and are not overly noisy. They aren't the cheapest tires but Nokians are some of the best tires IMHO.

+1 For the Nokian WR. I used them previously on a rwd BMW 528 and they served me well. On the MB, I use Blizzak DMV1 in the winter.

They don't carry the Nokian WRG3 SUV in 275/55 19in. Any other suggestions?

Michelin Pilot Sport a/s 3 or Michelin Latitude Tour. I think the former is available only in 19" for the GL. Latitude Tour is available in 20".
Both are good all season performance tires. If you are traveling the Sierras near Tahoe you might need to chain up from time to time.

The Toyo Celsius CUV's come in 275/55/19's, they are also an all-weather tire rated for severe winter weather like the Nokian WR G3. I know they come in the right size since I got them for my GL350 a month ago.

For my GL550, the only snow tire in 295/40R21 is the Pirelli Scorpion Snow. I haven't tried them but I probably should because the DMS 06 that I have on it aren't quite good enough in the snow.

I have the Scorpions on my 550GL and on a second set of wheels. I negotiated a fair price for the package with our dealer. Between that and the traction control, we've had no trouble in snow, but we've also not had many opportunities of heavy snow.

I usually research Tire Rack for tires fit and snow & ice ratings. I know there was a new Michelin rated very well for snow that we got for our GLK. We're still waiting for weather to test it. I haven't looked recently to know newer options for the GL.

For snow chains (cables), check out "Supuer Z LT" by SCC. I've used them on our '15 GL450 on ski trips and works great in the snow/ice. Easy to install also.

How about a different Continental setup? Although a bit pricey, the DWS 06 has been extremely good to us on multiple cars. The are also highly rated tires.

GL450
conti DWS wears out fast. i had them in my TL and was not too impressed. also very noisey. not a big conti fan.

i put Toyo Celcius CUV on my 450 12K miles ago. i drive to ski resorts all through winter and after a full winter i can attest that i am very happy with the toyo. it comes with 60K warranty. well i will be happy with 50K.

my pilot has michelin LTX M/S2. that would have been my choice. i got 70K out of it before. but they don't make those in size.
