Need advice from the pros!

Gents,

I hope life is treating you well.

I am looking to get into a full size SUV ASAP. I test drove a 2016 Yukon Denali today and it was great, but it had some things about that didn't sit right with me.

For the same price as a fully banged out new Denali, I can buy a very nicely appointed low mileage GL550. My questions are:

1. What are the differences between the 2013 and 2014 GL550's?
2. What tunes are available for this car, and what kind of power are we looking at?
3. Anyone have a tuned one? Is it sufficient?

On a side note, I read an old thread from 2014 where a tuner claimed that the GL450 and GL550 had the same power output after tune. Was that a typo?

Nope.

The V8 engine is the same on the 2013 and 2014 GLs, the 450 and 550 are simply tuned differently.

That said, the MB tune meets emissions standards and passed MB durability testing. Might, or might not, be considerations depending on your locale.

GLC300 (GL350-gone)
Small difference in graphics for Command system arose in 2014.
Warranty, wear items and near term Maint cost differences exist with a used car compared to new generally. You can negotiate to neutralize by getting new tires, brakes, wipers, all dry filters and trans fluid replaced so you start fresh and delay outlays, don't assume any got done! Slso price the CPO extension before buying see thread below. Unlimited miles on CPO applies to first 4 years coverages, too, before the CPO kicks in.

I traded a Yukon Denali for my 2015 GL350. Having a diesel omits me from the conversation about V8's and tuning. However, I can tell you that in every other measure of performance, convenience, reliability and comfort........the GL is a superior vehicle. I'd opt for the CPO Benz every time over a new Denali.

I've had a 14 450 and the 15 550 with the same engine. The 550 is a monster. It has been clocked by some of the car mags going 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. You really don't need a tune in the 550. I have never used all the power. The V8 in the 13 and 14 450's has the same engine exhaust note as the 550, it just feels like you are driving at a high altitude or something. It still has tons of power all over the rev range but not like the 550. If you get a cpo, I wouldn't mess with tuning it until your warranty is up. A warranty is invaluable on these cars. The 550 also has a slightly sportier suspension and steering setup. Perhaps that's partly due to the wider tires and wheel offsets. The V8 in either the 450 or 550 is awesome though. You'll be happy with either. The 550 by the way comes with driver adjustable dampers. You'll have a hard time finding a CPO 450 with that option.
