Replace Lighter with Power Outlet

I searched the forum and am surprised this hasn't already come up. I want to replace the cigarette lighter with a 12V power outlet. Is this an easy swap? Or does the whole console have to come out? Seems like it should be an easy swap with the correct tools, no?

Also, I want to get rid of the ashtray but the space it leaves has holes in the bottom. What goes there on the GLs that are ordered without the lighter/ashtray?

In my land Rover, I put these in all of the power outlets. Everything we use these days are charged with usb cords.

I use the exact same one (the first one) in my GL350. It's a good product. The 12" long Lightning cords are perfect with that too.

This is the one I use. One to consider if you prefer its metal body vs plastic ones.

I know this is an old thread but has anyone had any issues using a dual 2.4 amp port power outlet in the front socket? The rear seat doesn't have any issues, but only single USB ports will work and not the dual.

If you have a lighter it means you have the smoker option.

If X-166 is same as older models, you can check the parts fiche for the parts used on cars without this option. Most of the time there is a power socket instead. The socket is ISO 4163 fwiw.

The biggest annoyance for me was the fact that the power to all the 12V outlets is switched off when the GL is off. I understand what they do it but I like charging devices overnight when I am out camping.

I ended up up making a custom wiring harness that plugs into the trailer connector. It starts with the 13 pin round connector and terminates is a 3-gang cigarette lighter plug that also has 2 USB ports. Gets the job done.

GL and ML350 Bluetec
I have no problem with the Aukey dual 2.4 linked above in my cigarette lighter.

Thanks for the tip on the flush mount adapter. That looks great and is a much better use of the cigarette lighter. I also ordered a couple extras for other cars I have.
