How does it work if refundable? You can back out, but the dealership can also sell the car to someone else? What's stopping someone from placing 5 orders with different dealerships, then having them play off each other for the best price?

It doesn't make much sense if there's no commitment and penalty for both sides. You may as well not have any deposit.

Yes you can back out and yes the dealership has to then sell the car to someone else. After all, you are no longer buying it and it becomes just like any other car on the lot unless you ordered a car no one wants. A deposit is purely intended as a show of good faith that you are willing to put up money and intend to buy the car.

A nonrefundable deposit means you bought the car or lose your deposit and that is not considered fair as your situation could change and you no longer want/need the car. With a refundable deposit no one loses. Also you negotiate before you place your order ... at least that is what I did. The order process for me was for getting a car exactly the way I wanted it and the deposit was to show I was serious about the purchase and not just wasting the dealers time.

So if the dealership decides to sell the car to someone else at a higher price, I'm not at a loss?

And if I decide not to buy the car since someone else gave me a better deal, doesn't the dealership need to find another buyer? Isn't there a cost to finding that next buyer?

I was looking at a 2016 GLC300 at a dealer a few months ago, and that car is still there. It's a strange build - Grey with Beige. All premium package options except for keyless go. Whoever ordered that car really stuck it to the dealership - assuming it was not ordered to stock. I expect it will need to go for a significant discount now.

I've also read where a BMW dealer declined to custom order a car without a sunroof in case the buyer backed out (So Cal). And since non-refundable deposits are law in California, they didn't move ahead, even though pricing was agreed upon.

Just 2 examples where a non-refundable deposit may have made a difference.

I don't know if you are trying to be funny with "if the dealership decides to sell the car to someone else at a higher price, I'm not at a loss?"

I believe it's called "selling the car from under you". Say I agreed to buy the car for $45K. The car comes in. Another salesman has someone willing to pay $47K for it since they just finished their lease and need another car right away. I'm left without a car. The dealership agrees to order me another one at $45K.

Perhaps the new salesman would be laughing. But I'm not sure I would be even though I'm not directly out a cent. But I would consider it being at a loss.

Just an additional thought that hasn't been raised. My dealership asked for a $500 deposit. I said how about more? They said maximum $2,500. It was refundable. This was so I could get credit card points.

And then when I went to sign once the car was ready, I was allowed to put another $2,500 on my credit card. Max at the dealership was $2,500 per transaction. But the deposit on the card was not counted - loophole.

My dealer confirmed that it is $5000 per vehicle including any deposit.

Hate to say it but advice for all "newbies" beware of the "Troll of the Week deal".

Mercedes-Benz C300 (2016), Mercedes-Benz GLC300 (2017)
I placed my order this week for a 2017 GLC300, MSRP of the build was $50,500 and I was able to get a 9.5% discount. This is an exact build, not a vehicle off the lot.

Mercedes-Benz C300 (2016), Mercedes-Benz GLC300 (2017)
MB Buffalo. Even though I live in Rochester, we bought our 2016 C300 there and have been very impressed with their sales team and service department. Our sales rep is outstanding, incredibly sharp and helpful.

They will also make the drive to my house with loaners if ever needed, so the added distance is really not a big concern of mine (about an hour drive vs about 20 min drive to my local dealer).

That being said, I don't have anything against the MB Rochester dealer. When we shopped for the C300 we happened to be in Buffalo on a Sat afternoon and stopped by that dealership just to kick tires. A couple of days later we picked up the car.

So you ordered your GLC300 at the same place you purchased your C300? Buying a second car from the same sales agent may have contributed to your great deal? When I went back to my SL550 sales guy he offered $250 under invoice for a 2016 GLC300 he had on the lot. So maybe some of the great (over 6.5%) deals on the thread are due to repeated business discounts and better "haggling" as opposed to someone getting their first MB? Having purchased 26 cars in my lifetime I could never understand the dynamics that go into getting a great car deal.
FWIW - Seems that I got better deals when NOT having a trade in, buying a car off the lot, and end of the month and/or year.

I certainly think a 2nd car in 12 months (in fact, could be 12 months to the day when I pick it up) helps.

Honestly, I was a bit surprised to get upwards of 10% on an order. I went into this thinking 5-8% on an order and possibly better on an in-stock vehicle.

And in fact, I almost skipped the GLC and went with a 2nd C300. I could have gotten a killer deal on a 2016 (about 13.5% off). But it would have been 100% identical to my current C300 except for the exterior color, and I wanted 2 different vehicles.

2016 GLC 300
...got 10% off MSRP (multimedia and premium pkgs were all i selected), plus all weather mats. My family purchased 3 other MBs in last two months from same salesman which helped. Wife bought one last night also, 12.5% off, but that included a fleet discount from her employer in addition to the 10% off MSRP (on a C300 coupe).

First Luxury Car

Hey guys; I'm looking to pick up a GLC and would appreciate some advice on the price negotiation. I'm in the Phoenix area and while looking at ordering a new 17, the dealer told me he had a 16 on the lot that was exactly what I was ordering. The car is pretty much what I am looking for, it is black instead of brilliant blue, but I can live with that. It does have 75 miles on it which I have been told are just all test drive miles. I have seen some others post they have gotten 10-12% of 16's; should I be looking for about the same, or should I be more aggressive because of the extra miles? Thanks for any help.

Definitely take off an extra $0.75 per mile from your buying price for miles on the car.

2017 MSRP is a few hundred dollars more than 2016--but if/when you go to sell it, a 2017 is a year "newer".
As for negotiating, it is very dependent on geographic area. I'm in Los Angeles, which has many dealers and is very competitive. Not sure if the deals are as good in Phoenix. You'll have to play the dealers off against each other.
I would not worry about the 75 miles. Mention it in the negotiation, but I wouldn't push or expect much.

MSRP 46185
Purchase price 40659
Doc prep 349
Tax 2563 (6.25%)
Reg & title 167
Title prep 5
Drive out price 43743

Their internet sales manager gave me 5026 off MSRP (including fleet) through email, but I received another 500 by going to their Open Haus event. And while at the event, I grabbed another $130 in their cash booth.
