RESET YOUR SERVICE LIGHT

When you go to Mercedes for service they expect you to do the required service as per the manual. Many times all you really need is an oil change. They will not reset your service light unless you do the whole deal. Here's how to reset it yourself and save a few bucks... Frank

Not sure what this accomplishes.

GLK needs service only once per year (including the oil change).

EDIT: I see what you mean, some services are BS (check this, check that), but can you just do an oil change?

I own my GLK.. But I lease my E350. Assume I am giving theE350 back in a few months why spend the money on a B service. Just reset the service light and tell them you went to a private shop. (which is allowed).
A-Service and B-Service

Just a breakdown of what's all included in A & B Services. Got the handbook from the dealership. Basically, you're paying an arm and a leg for inspections.

A SERVICE (~ $305.95 + tax) :

- Inspect and record tread depth, and correct tire pressure
- Rotate tires (excludes AMG, Sports Models, SLK, and vehicles with staggered wheels)
- Engine oil change and oil filter replacement
-Includes Mobil 1 synthetic oil
- Lubrication service
- Includes hood hinges, lock cylinders, striker
plates, sun roof tracks and top off all fluids
- Cooling system inspection
- Includes antifreeze protection level, hoses and
clamps
- Brake inspection
- Includes check of pad thickness and condition of
discs, fluids and lines
- Inspect heating and ventilation dust filter, replace if needed. (Replacement additional. Dust filter prices vary by model)
- Function check
- Includes warning lamps, headlights, exterior
lights, seat belts, windshield wiper and washer
- Inspect and lubricate throttle linkage
- Check and clean air filter
- Reset flexible service system counter

B SERVICE (~ $479.95 + tax) :

- Inspect windshield wiper inserts and service windshield washer system (Replacement of wiper inserts additional*).
- Inspect and rotate tires, record tread depth, and correct tire pressure. (Wheel balance additional*).
-excludes AMG, Sports Models, SLK, and vehicles
with staggered wheels
- Engine oil change and oil filter replacement
-Includes Mobil 1 synthetic oil
- Lubrication service
- Includes hood hinges, lock cylinders, striker
plates, sun roof tracks and top off all fluids
- Cooling system inspection
- Includes antifreeze protection level, hoses and
clamps
- Brake inspection
- Includes check of pad thickness and condition of
discs, fluids and lines
- Inspect heating and ventilation dust filter, replace if needed. (Replacement additional*. Dust filter prices vary by model)
- Function check
- Includes warning lamps, headlights, exterior
lights, seat belts, windshield wiper and washer
- Inspect and lubricate throttle linkage
- Check and clean air filter
- Reset flexible service system counter
- Inspect front axle ball joints; check steering play and power steering clutch; and rear differential levels
- Inspect Poly V-Belt for condition
- Inspect starting and charging system and service battery
- Inspect climate control refrigerant

* Not included in total

i see, thanks for the heads up, basically the same thing as with toyotas. They have all these check-ups but who cares, as long as you change oil regularly they run forever.

Thanks. My B service message just came on and I was thinking about bringing it to the dealer. Now I'll just reset it and bring it to Iffy Lube and get an oil change. Should be ok right?

My confidence in this Forum just dropped to nil. Assuming that someone above is planning to return a leased vehicle after resetting the service indicator without having the work done.
That is just wrong.

That was not the point of the thread or the post. What it come down to is, do you want to pay $2-400 for an oil change and inspection of some parts of the vehicle that you can inspect? If that is the case do us all a favor and do that. In many cases the dealer will not reset the service indicator unless you have them do all the service. For those who choose to do the service themselves or have another service provider perform the service that is the owners prerogative. It is not to say that there are certain things that the dealer is most qualified to do.

Read some of the other posts before you judge us. And, if you still believe that we are wrong for what we do then I would suggest that you not read what we have to say and continue to pay MB.

BTW thanks for your confidence in the forum and its participants.

"Just reset the service light and tell them you went to a private shop. (which is allowed)."
I read that as reset the light without doing the work. If I am wrong I apologize.

For those who lease a vehicle so be it. They may not have the care or concern for the vehicle the way we owners care. It wouldn't surprise me if they used regular in their vehicles.

With that said your apology is not necessary just your understanding of how everyone thinks and how they treat their GLK's.

Enjoy the forum there's a lot to learn out there and if you have a question don't be afraid to ask.

No.... they will NOT use the right oil... they use Pennzoil products... this thread is strictly for those who prefer to do their own service work.

Car fax will show all the service provided by the dealer. If I leaded a new car, I would have the dealer provide the service to safe guard my investment as the dealer and the next buyer will surely check the car fax.

How many miles do you put on your vehicle before you have the oil changed?

I did it at 8000 miles because I do mostly around town driving. Original oil was very clear---replaced it with synthetic oil from Penzoil. This will not negate warranty on vehicle.

Just as an FYI Penzoil does not even list the GLK as a vehicle that they recommend an oil product for.

http://ew5.earlweb.com/search.php?subset=214

If this is the case MB would have a reason to deny any engine warranty related issues. If it doesn't meet the MB 229.5 spec then it is not meant for the vehicle.

Check with your husband.

As much as I think highly of SOPUS products such as Pennzoil, I really am only cognizant of M1 being readily available for Mercedes consumption & warranty service.
That being said, if you can find one of these two elusive Pennzoil European formula 5W-40, then it is spec'd for Merc 229.5:
http://www.epc.shell.com/Docs/GPCDOC...0906031757.pdf

or
http://www.pennzoil.com/documents/PE...ropean5W40.pdf

they are just rebadged Shell Helix Ultra, from what I've read, but great oils.

Penzoil does make a Platinum Synthetic 0-30 that meets the MB 229.5 spec but it's the wrong viscosity for our GLK's. In fact a quick look at their website doesn't even list the GLK in the cars covered by their products. Besides, have you ever visited a JL? They give everyone the same standard oil as everyone else, then charge as if they gave you the better oil.

Why do you think they don't allow customers in the service area..?

I used instructions on the link by "F18BEN" and was able to reset the service reminder on my 2011 E350, W212. The instructions are easy to follow. I am concerned which one now to use Pennzoil European formula 5W-40 or Mobil 1 0W-40. Do both meet MB Sec 229.5 Who sells Pennzoil European formula 5W-40 in US or online. Please clarify the differences.

The differences are in the additives. The Euro formula oils, which do include a few Pennzoil products have an additive pack to protect the engine.
Here is the list to read. I would print it out and take to any quick lube and oil shop.
http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html
I would insist they use the right oil and prove to you they used it and not whatever happy bulk oil they have. Of course they'll charge you more as they should - but prove they used it.

Once you realize how easy can be to do it yourself you just might start doing it at home and save the money and hassle.
