The Official GLK Problems with Aging Thread

Now that our GLK's are getting up in the miles, (and years) I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread where experienced GLK owners can post issues, both positive and negative, about their aging cars so that if trends develop, we as well as future owners can see what we're in for.

Close to 27K miles, our GLK is running amazingly and drives exceptionally well (engine and trans) although I wish the steering feel was less numb. Paint job holding up very well with routine care. No major mechanical issues at all... knock wood.

Other exceptions are as noted:

1) The fast wearing OEM Dunlop tires are now done.
2) The pass. side inner wheel liner came undone and fell down. (Dealer caused & fixed.)
3) The dash suffers from internal buzzes and rattles.
4) The Nik. radio sounds tinny. Maybe speaker wear, fatigue or sun/heat aging... Not sure?

Not bad at all! Now let's see how everyone else's GLK is fairing?

Thanks!

The rear hatch motor has been a problem in the 2010's I had mine replaced.

The windshield is so upright that when its raining and the wipers are on and you are moving at a reasonable rate of speed water is pulled back across the windshield. (A design flaw)

Other minor problems but overall I would buy the car again.

3 years and 25-30k miles is barely aging, I think you'll have to make another thread like this in 3-5 years. Car is still new.

Anyways...
- Paint is great, esp. if you hand wash it yourself (no swirl marks at all)
- Tires are still holding up, and no tire bubbles with 20's - amazed considering couple potholes and curbs I've run over.
- I put headlight covers, so headlights still look brand new
- car drives great
- had the hitch problem like many of us, but after the replacement/adjustment never had a problem
- also Command display just stopped working one day - was replaced under warranty
- other than those 2 small things great reliable car
- service at my dealer is great also
Would get another MB when time comes.

P.S. when I drive through parking garage with no music I do hear slight noise coming from interior panels, but I would not call it rattling and def. no squeaking. Still feels like a very solid car.

This will be interesting. The Control Standard Vehicle will have an 8 1/2 year, 111,000 mile headstart.

Listening to the rain in East Texas. A most welcome sound we haven't heard since forever.

I think there is none at the moment but there has been an elevated Coil-Pack failure issue by a few members here in recent months, especially with 2011's.

I think 36k miles on ours. Zero problems. No squeaks or rattles to speak of either. Would definitely buy an MB again if it keeps going like this.

I saw poster Isobelle with their smoking coil pack but wasn't aware of any other.

May have to monitor.

With my experience with coil packs I've kinda had done my fill of them.

Two year old 2010 GLK with 12,500 miles. I have the hitch issue just like everyone else, but haven't replaced the motor yet. It's been great otherwise except for something weird yesterday. While driving/waiting at a light, the temperature control (AC) turned on by itself. I turn it off and a minute or two later, it comes back on again. Repeat this a few times until I get to my destination. I thought this was a fluke which would go away after I restart the car. It didn't, it would not stay off. Out of frustration, I turn the temperature knob back and forth then turned it off again. It worked, the thing stayed off this time. Weird, I blame it on daylight savings time.

Please explain "I have the hitch issue just like everyone else, but haven't replaced the motor yet." Is this the trailer hitch or something else? Sounds like liftgate/tailgate.

Perhaps it is a HATCH issue? As in rear hatch?

2010 GLK 6k miles. CEL has been on 3 times already, all for the same transmission sensor that they keep claiming that they replaced. One more time and I will claim it as a lemon.

I used the wrong term, it's the tailgate door not going up sometimes. As for the trailer hitch, I installed one a few weeks ago. It's the hidden hitch from etrailers.com. The install was a bit tricky, but it looks great and fits perfectly.

Thanks for the clarification. I knew to be on the lookout for tailgate troubles. Our GLK will have the factory trailer hitch.

glk
got a 2011 glk with 25k miles now, First off loved the car when I got it, shifting was weird but I figure it needs to be broken in. Well it still does it to this day and only sometimes. Then comes the leaking windshield washer bottle, clicking and not opening lift gate, then the horrible brake noise, loud cooling fan noise, and tires are wearing unevenly. I brought it into mb have these problem taken care of and only two were fixed. new water bottle, new lift gate motor. Excuse for the brakes was wear and tear. ( wow already at 25k miles ) transmission was shifting fine when we test drove no codes. ( the glk rental they gave me did the same thing ) Tire wear you might have hit a pot hole and need to get an alignment ( i must have hit a pot hole on all four wheels yea right). I bought a mercedes cause I heard it was the best, well at 25k and already having these many problems, I can only imagine as it gets older. I cant wait to trade this in. Please let me know if anyone else is having these problems.a

^ I do feel your pain! We have not had as many issues as you, but are still considering a trade since our desire to have it transformed/converted into a Brabus GLK went belly-up.

Did you have it set to an automatic setting? I haven't gotten 100% familiar with the GLK yet but some vehicles will cycle the AC when the climate control system is set to automatic if the humidity is too high. My 4Runner was like that. It was annoying. Had to keep one eye on the AC light.

the interior driver and passenger side handle...squeak and creak upon grasping closing the doors. Seems like nothing held together at the center of the bar.

Ours doesn't do that. It isn't a Texas thing since we are about 100 miles east of you. Our GLK was built on October 11, 2011. Maybe that was a "good" day.

1st month of owning: lift gate troubles (replaced motor)
2nd month of owning: transmission reprogramming (jerking from third down to second gear), 1 remote fob replaced
3rd month of owning: Alignment of all four wheels required (car pulling to the right and steering wheel off-centre)-car has only 4500 kilometers
4th month of owning: the dreaded wind noise on the sun roof (dealer said it was normal. test drove with shop forman and test drove another glk loaner....same thing <my mazda 3 is whisper quiet than this!!!>

My mom's GLK is at around 40000 KM, and the break squeak is horribly loud. With the radio in medium volume, we can still hear the squeak from the outside. When we reach a stop light, it's so embarrassing when someone turns and look at a mercedes that's making the noise. Anyone else have this problem?

Is it still under warranty?
1. No car I have owned since 1989 ever did that.
2. It may be an audible time to replace the pads warning.
3. Take it to a service shop and have it fixed.
4. Disc brakes do not make noise.

There are wear sensors on each wheel if you are hearing a squealing or something like metal against metal that is the sensor. Do you hear it when you back up? That's the sensor. Have the brakes and rotors checked. Brakes are normal wear and tear items but I know some people on the forum especially in CA have gotten their pads and rotors changed for free.

OK, so if we say it twice maybe it will sink in? Can't hurt.

Have your brakes checked and corrected. That is 3 times. Should be sufficient.
