S32 COMAND Launch navigation package ???

hi. i was just wondering if anyone has this package, what it includes and is it the smaller screen? i am a little confused on the difference between this and multi-media package... i checked MBUSA but I'm guessing the "launch" is over with so they don't even offer it anymore.. thanx in advance

S32 and multimedia are the same things, the difference is right now there is an issue with the supplier of the 6 cd change that normally comes with the multimedia package, supplier is in Japan and the delay is related to the tsunami. So to answer the question the s32 is same as multimedia except it has single disc and is almost 2k less them mm. And who cares because who uses CD's nowaday anyways.

I think the option/pacakge number is #S33. That is what is on my order form.

As for the screen.......Several sources list it at 7". The price difference is -$400.

COMAND system with hard-drive navigation

Using GPS technology and a 40GB hard drive to store maps, points of interest, and Zagat® Survey ratings for restaurants, hotels and golf courses, this virtual copilot provides detailed driving directions with remarkable speed and a friendly voice. The COMAND system's large color-LCD screen also displays gas stations, ATMs and Mercedes-Benz dealerships along your route within the contiguous U.S., Canada and Oahu, Hawaii, with periodic updates available at your authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer.
We use CDs. Be nice.

Maybe this is #S32.........$930. A big difference from the MM packages. No backup camera. No iPod/MP3 connections. You will be using CDs. Grinning.

Cockpit Management and Data (COMAND) system with a 40-gigabyte hard drive-based navigation; 7-inch, retractable color LCD screen; 6-gigabyte hard drive sound file storage; Gracenote database music recognition; In-dash single disc CD/DVD player; PCMCIA slot; Zagat Restaurant Guide; Voice control some audio, navigation and hands-free communication system functions

For the record...........

This evening I RIPPED over 350 songs and placed them on my MP3 player. Yep, I have one of those. The GLK cable better work with a Sansa MP3 player.
I have room for more music. I'll dig into the classical pile next.

The 6 cd changer is also 6 DVD changer and can play DVDs when parked. Or you can burn MP3's onto the DVDs for a total of 30 GB of music.

We know all of that. All the more reason for my displeasure. Right now, if you can even get someone at a dealership to explain it to you, the 6 disc changer is a special order which adds $250 for a special order plus $485 for the changer. Too rich for me.

S32 Package

If it's the same as on the C-Class, it's a less costly variant of what will be the $2790 Multimedia Package. It costs $930 and has everything that will be in MM Package except rearview camera: the two main parts of the S32 package are Voice Control and COMAND System w/Hard Drive Navigation, which includes 3D map views, 7-inch high resolution color display, Gracenote album information including album cover art, single-disc DVD/CD changer and SD card slot, 10GB hard drive music register, and Sirius. It's being pitched as a "launch" package which will be available only for initial production runs.

If it doesn't you could always just load your MP3s to the hard drive's music register.

You cannot - the feature of transferring MP3s to the music register has been disabled for US vehicles due to copyright issues. MBUSA sucks.

Either way it's of no concern. You can get a HUGE SD card or use nearly any USB flash drive or hard drive for storage. Works wonderfully with album art and all. It will even search for songs by voice.

Copying songs to Music Register Hard Drive

I just went out to my car and tried it.

The REC (record) option appeared when I was playing music from a CD, but not from a USB storage stick.

I easily copied songs from the CD.

I'll try an SD card later, but guessing that won't work.

For me it doesn't matter that much, since most of my music is iTunes-->iPod, but since someone gave some music on that USB stick, there will be an extra step of copying it to a CD and then onto hard drive.

Frustrating, I guess, if someone was planning to transfer large amounts of music from an SD Card or USB storage device to the hard drive and not to an iPod.

Yes, it appears that music can only be transfered to the hard drive from a CD. The REC command does not appear when playing music from SD card.

It is just MB's way of saying if it's on a CD it must be an original. You would assume that most people would not transfer music to a CD just to move it to the HD in your vehicle. Transfer does work from a CD even if it is not an original CD. MB's form of copy write protection or infringement.

On a similar thread in the C-Class/C204 neighborhood someone said that the file format must match an original CD file format. I forget the extension, but the theory was that MP3, etc. ripped file formats would not work even though they were stored on a CD. Have you tried other file formats from a CD? Curious before I load up a CD with MP3 format files.

The REC option doesn't appear when you insert a CD with MP3s on it, but the MP3s play -- no problem.

We're probably better off to just rip your CDs on a desktop/laptop computer and write them to a Compact Flash card. An 8GB card can be had for no more than $15

The hard drive seems only to be useful for ripping original music CDs, but why bother? (unless you don't have a desktop/laptop).

Another question. The S32 package doesn't come withe the iPhone/iPod connector in the glove box. However, I see that option 518 can be added to the S32 option:

iPod/MP3 Media Interface - $365
Requires: [S32] COMAND Single Disc Package; Or [S34] COMAND 6-Disc Package; Excludes: [057] iPod Integration Kit And [320] Multimedia Package And [S33] Multimedia Package w/Single Disc

Has anyone done this post delivery?

I also believe the S32 does not come with rear back up camera, Gracenote media database, or enhanced Voice Control. (By the way, you can no longer purchase the S32 on cars that need to be ordered... only what's on the dealer lot at the present time.)

I took delivery of a 2012 GLK last Thursday and it has the S32 option.

You are correct, it does not have a back up camera, but it DOES have the Gracenote database.

I'm not sure what enhanced Voice Control is, but it does have voice control.

My wife's 2011 E350 has the Multimedia package, and has the iPhone/iPod connector in the glovebox, but my GLK does not. The E350 has streaming audio via bluetooth, the GLK does not (I think that there was some way to activate it though?)

I'm trying to find out if it possible to add the iPhone/iPod connection to my GLK that did not have it installed at the factory.

S32 PCMCIA slot

I've had my new 2012 GLK with P1 and S32 for almost two weeks now and I'm wondering about the usefulness of the PCMCIA slot. Is there some type of adapter available that would allow me to plug in a memory stick or something else? I thought PCMCIA was kind of old-hat, but perhaps not.
