I lost one card the same way, gone unnoticed until one day I couldn't open the center console cover. It's clearly a design defect to me, don't know why the car makers won't fix it. Anyway, I started online search after dealer asking for $200 & 2 hours to get my card back.
First, thanks kozak79 for the magical duct tape solution. However it doesn't work for me after fishing for half an hour Then thanks to another post from Trasher: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/x204...ood-grain.html, I decided to remove the climate control system to recover my card. Hopefully some pictures here will be helpful to you:
1) Get the plastic trim removal tool and carefully remove the trim plate around temp dials (pry around the upper corners first)
2) Remove the two small T20 torx screws at the bottom.
3) Pull out the temp unit with all wires connected (there are two plastic hooks on the top, release them first)
4) Get your hand in and take the lost card out (let me know if you found something else . You don't actually need to dissemble the center console itself.
5) Put the temp unit back in. Remember to get the two plastic hooks on the top clicked in before screwing back the two T20 torx screws on the bottom.
6) Put the trim plate back on.
7) Have a cold drink and back to love your car!

Crazy Things Happen
Thank You All I thought it only happened to me. My Hight secured work I'd went sliding under my console. Which caused me some serious problems at work for days. My Son reviewed the post and was able to retrieve my ID because of the post. Thank You!

The duct tape rules!
Wow, the duct tape worked like a charm on the very first try: I have bent the duct tape on one edge (about 1/2") and glued this bent part to the (fully closed) tray cover, then carefully opened the cover while holding to the other end of the duct tape that was facing the sticky side up at this time. Then started to close the cover again while making sure the duct tape is sliding together with the cover - the card came out on the duct tape like you wouldn't believe! Total satisfaction!

The tape method worked first time for me! It worked and I was able to retrieve the card even though the door opened and was fully closing. I knew I didnt lose the card and glad I was able to figure it out for my own piece of mind. Thanks!
