Automatic Trunk noise

I believe it's a common issue on GLK (design flaw). I don't think it's related to the lock itself. Quick fix (if we can call it fix) would be to adjust the tailgate opening limit to slightly below the point where you hear that loud "click" noise

If there is a clunk, I would check to see if the hinges are loose. The struts may go over center and cause a latching or the tailgate may actually move. With the gate open grasp the two corners and see if there is any play or looseness. Also check that the headliner is not being moved by the tailgate. When the gate is closed does it lineup properly with both sides and the bottom? If not it indicates that the hinges are not aligned properly. It should be a nice smooth open and close even the latch pull-in.

I listened to mine more closely and it does give a "pop" when the lock disengages but I wouldn't really call it a "big clunk"...
